The Marlins could also look to upgrade at third base or center field, two other positions of need. Beinfest indicated that Emilio Bonifacio, who can play either position, will be in the lineup, one way or the other.

Signing Aramis or Reyes (shift Hanley), makes the most sense if we want to talk offense, but I still don't know how that money lines up considering this team needs two 200 IP horses.

Too much uncertainty in the rotation to spend $$$ on a CF. How can the Marlins win a playoff series with this rotation?
That's why I'm not a fan of signing Albert. Ok great, we have Albert and all of the casual fans start playing with themselves but the team hasn't addressed it's biggest need.
Hugg made a great point about Sizemore. Petey Pipes can do what Sizemore has done recently. For less money and with less injury risk.
It's about making the team better, period.
The rotation might be the weakest link, but CF is certainly a weak link as well.
It's not easy to just find two great SP's out of nowhere. Long-term contracts for pitching are probably more unpredictable, as well.

By no means am I saying acquiring Grady Sizemore is a slam dunk.
However, it's the kind of high upside move this team is going to need to have work out in order for them to reach the playoffs. Same with Zambrano. We're going to still need people to significantly out perform their contracts, even with an increase in payroll.
I think a smart move is signing one of the free agent starters and aqcuiring a 2nd via trade. I do still think we need a position player or two, however.
All of this is why I really hate the idea of getting closer this offseason. Closer in free agency simply don't out perform their contracts, unless you get a bounceback candidate, which we're not going to do because we want a "proven guy."poop

I think people are being unrealistic. Just because we want the top two SP's in the FA class doesn't mean we'll get them. And at the end of the day, the list of free agent SP's is rather terrible this offseason.
C.J Wilson is the best SP available; while I'd love to him, he'll likely be overpaid and has plenty of question marks, himself.

I don't think Petey is that good.
I do think that Petey for 400k is probably a much better investment as a starting CF than spending 5-6 mil on Sizemore (he'll get that much) when he hasn't been good for 3 years and has 2 bad wheels.

Of course, maybe I'm biased from my dad spending days talking about how sad it was to watch the ghost of grady sizemore play.

Sizemore in 71 games last season: .224/.285/.422 0.5 war
Petersen in 74 games last season: .265/.357/.387 0.5 war
now when you factor in you're gonna pay Sizemore over 10 times as much...explain how that's smart baseball
Sizemore had microfracture in his left knee and then missed a good chunk of last season with an injury to his right knee. And it's not like he was good when he played. I'd be much more inclined to spend money on him if he looked good when he played.

If we had a bigger payroll then sure I'd spend that money to see if he comes back to form.
