Because Loria lets Beinfest spend pennies on the draft when every other team is spending dollars. Cant really blame Beinfest when he is forced to let high upside guys pass to other teams because they want $200K more than slot.

For what he has to work with, he has done a nice job.Amy Adams, AKA Cinnamon MuffLogan Morrison: "If baseball didn't exist, I would probably be ... like a curler. Or a hairstylist."

No one expected Pudge to play that well, and Uggla would not have even gotten his chance except that Pokey Reese decided to go AWOL two days into training camp.
IN WHAT FUCKING WORLD WAS THE PUDGE SIGNING LUCKY? FUCK, YOU MAKE MY HEAD HURT.
Take a look at his stats before you going off with your verbal diarrhea. You're out of your fucking mind. And because you are too fucking lazy to click the link, here's a screen cap:
Pudge actually took a step back from his prior seasons. So in reality, he actually took a step backwards. Same goes for Urbina. He had decent peripherals in 2003 before the trade, but was a very good reliever in 2001-2002.
THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.

2) a) To me it's almost more impressive to put together a winner with people you yourself didn't choose to have on the team
b) No one expected Pudge to play that well? He had a 3 year deal on the table from the Orioles. The concern was health over a full season, not production. He had a .900 OPS in 2002, .888 in 2001 and 1.042 in 2000.
c) But Uggla was scouted by and drafted by Beinfest and Co. He put up a 1.000 OPS in the fall league and yes, Reese was in the driver's seat, but he was the vet. Uggla was going to be on the roster regardless.
d) What about the Willis trade? Pavano? Stealing Redman who was one of our best pitchers? All the bench players and relievers that contributed in big ways?Originally posted by Madman81Most of the people in the world being dumb is not a requirement for you to be among their ranks.

That the Fish had Wilson, Johnson, and Hamptons contracts coming out even with none playing there.Amy Adams, AKA Cinnamon MuffLogan Morrison: "If baseball didn't exist, I would probably be ... like a curler. Or a hairstylist."
