Foxsportsfla.com thinks our pick is strange.......
Jose Fernandez, RHP, Alonso H.S. (Fla.) | Picked By: Florida Marlins
There’s no denying Jose Fernandez’ power arm and it’s one of the better ones in the high school class. He works at 93-95 mph and is physically mature. But, for a 14th overall pick in a deep draft class, he’s quite crude. His secondary pitches remain inconsistent and his fastball command is far from refined at this point. You can’t knock taking upside, but it was somewhat surprising that Florida went this route over one of the safer college bats.

MIAMI -- Jose Fernandez was rendered speechless when Hanley Ramirez greeted him in the dugout during Marlins batting practice Thursday night before a game against the Braves.
Fernandez got his first taste of the big leagues after Florida selected him with the 14th overall pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft Monday night.
"It's big, and it feels great to be here now in the dugout. What can I say?" Fernandez said. "It's nice."
The 18-year-old senior pitcher from Braulio Alonso High School in Tampa made the trip down with his parents and girlfriend.
His father, Ramon, said that they were surprised the Marlins took his son, because other teams such as the Dodgers and Cardinals seemed to show the most interest.
Now, they're happy Jose will be close to home and in a city with a large Latin population.
"We're still processing it. We knew he would be picked in the Draft, but we didn't know if it would be in the first round or another round," Ramon Fernandez said. "He got here just three years ago from Cuba, so to see him get picked in the first round is something incredible. That's something that can only be attained with lots of hard work daily, and that's what he does. I've never seen anyone work like him."
Jose is actually missing his high school graduation on Friday as he visits the Marlins' organization.
"It's a lot of stuff, big things happening and it's my dream I've been waiting for," Jose said. "You've got to clear your mind little by little."
Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria met Jose and his family during batting practice and asked them to sit with him during the game.
Asked what stood out to him most, Loria said Fernandez's demeanor and poise, not his "gifted right arm."
"Fantastic kid," Loria said. "I heard that he was a talented young man and I couldn't be happier to meet him."Originally posted by Madman81Most of the people in the world being dumb is not a requirement for you to be among their ranks.

JORGE EBRO

When the Marlins chose Jose Fernandez ranked 14th draft pick last June, it appeared he was about to place a marriage between the prospect and the team that would last a long time and have their best days in the future park team in Little Havana.
Now there could be no wedding.
Meetings between the club and the Cuban boy have not led to the signing of the player in high school because of differences in financial terms from both sides. While camp Fernández asks around $ 4 million fish reportedly offered $ 1.6 million.
"Basically, the Marlins are offering so-called" slot,''which is sort of a recommendation of the Office of the Commissioner,''said Omar Claro, who runs public relations Fernandez. "The team knows quality Fernández and would ready to upload the majors easily.''
Of unsuccessful negotiations, Fernandez would have two paths to choose: he could accept an offer from the professional league Japanese four-year, $ 5 million or return to the education system for another year in order to return to the Draft, and no commitments to Marlins.
If you choose the second path and continues to mature as a player, Fernandez increase their values should come back to the Draft and expand their options to be selected in a lower position, between the first five-, which would be associated with a potentially larger sum.
Fernández a righthander 18 and of 6-3 tall and 215 pounds arrived from Cuba in 2008 its fourth attempt escape Island and settled in Tampa where guaranteed by its straight reached travel 98 miles became one lucky local legend in Braulio Alonso High School.
According to reports compiled by the Marlins, Fernandez has a fastball that travels in a range from 92 to 98 miles, and a broken solid pitching.
The Cuban finished his last season in high school with a record of 13-1, 1.35 ERA, 134 strikeouts in 93 innings and two no-hitters. Lifetime on school had 30-3 with 314 strikeouts and just 59 tickets
Google Translation if anyone wants to read it. Not great but gives you the jist of it.
That's a very large difference.

We're not gonna give him $4 million.
But I highly doubt we only offered $1.6 million. That would be lower than what we gave Yelich last year. We've basically given our middle first round picks ~1.7 for the last few years. He's gonna have to come way down from that.
--------------------
$4 mil would have been the 4th highest bonus last year and the 5th highest in 2009. He's not the 15th best draft prospect over the last 3 years. Get real, kid.poop
