    Young Marlins enduring growing pains

MIAMI -- Youth is not an excuse for when the Marlins struggle. But part of being an inexperienced team is dealing with growing pains.

On May 26, the Marlins improved to 10 games above .500, but they've stumbled at a 2-6 clip since.

Early in the season, manager Edwin Rodriguez cautioned that the organization, media and fans would have to show patience with a youthful squad.

This past week shows what Rodriguez was talking about. The Marlins have struggled with runners in scoring position, as well as stranding baserunners.

"It is a process," the manager said. "We always talk about being patient. Sometimes you kind of try to rush everything and hurry up everything. We have very young players in the bullpen and on the field."

Even though they have a young squad, the Marlins still have high expectations. And they feel like they can be a playoff team in a division that features the Phillies and Braves.

Rodriguez says his team can learn not only by its own experiences, but by observing other teams.

"The Phillies, they bring their A-game every day," Rodriguez said. "They don't take days off. We have to learn from that. This is the big leagues. You have to bring your A-game every night."
