Here's the doozie: In his career, Hanley has a OPS over 1.000 in September. Only once did he not break a 1.000 OPS for the month, in 2007 when it was only .970.

The Marlins have only had one previous 1.000 OPS hitter. Gary Sheffield, 2006.

Only three shortstops in the history of the game have finished the season with a OPS over 1.000: Alex Rodriguez (4 times), Nomar Garciapara (2 times), and Arky Vaughan (1 time, who also holds the OPS record at 1.098)

Hey, whatever it lacks in poetry it makes up for in clarity.

I knew, in a sort of off-handed way, that Hanley Ramirez is enjoying yet another brilliant season. But after looking at his actual season, I've come to believe that he must be the most underrated player in the major leagues and that probably nobody else is really all that close.

I also "knew" that Albert Pujols is so far ahead of everyone else in the National League that he's basically had the MVP locked up since Memorial Day. I don't get the impression that anyone's even talking about any other candidates. Somebody asks, "Who's the MVP in the National League?" and you say "Why, Albert Pujols of course!" And then it's on to the next burning topic.

Let's got back to this one for a minute, though. According to FanGraphs, there's virtually no difference this season between Pujols, Ramirez, and Chase Utley (which shouldn't be a big surprise, as those three have been among the league's best for three years running).

Granted, you'll get a different answer if you look at different metrics, at least one of which has Pujols way ahead of everyone else ... except for Tim Lincecum, who with a dozen wins in late August isn't anyone's -- well, except Jonah Keri -- idea of an MVP candidate.

Maybe Pujols really is the best player in the National League. He probably is. But there's a .365-hitting shortstop with power, playing for a contending team. Shouldn't we at least take a deep breath and think a few thoughts?
