  • EdWIN: I Think [CC & Stanton] Will Be Ready for Opening [Night]

JUPITER, Fla. -- There is growing optimism that Chris Coghlan and Mike Stanton will be ready for the start of the regular season.

Coghlan (sore right shoulder) and Stanton (right quadriceps strain) each played the outfield on Tuesday in a Minor League game.

It was Stanton's first game in right field since he suffered a leg injury in a Feb. 27 scrimmage against the University of Miami.

Manager Edwin Rodriguez said that barring any setbacks, the two outfielders could be playing on Thursday against the Red Sox at Roger Dean Stadium.

The Marlins have yet to play a Grapefruit League game with their projected starting outfield on the field together.

Coghlan is switching to center field, making room for Logan Morrison, after he played left field in his first two big league seasons. He missed most of the second half of 2010 with a torn meniscus in his left knee. Earlier in camp, Coghlan experienced shoulder soreness.

The Marlins open against the Mets on April 1 at Sun Life Stadium. The team projects to have Morrison in left field, Coghlan in center and Stanton in right.

"I think both will be ready for Opening Day," Rodriguez said.

          Stanton and Cogs go BOOM

Chris Coghlan and Mike Stanton expect to play in the Florida Marlins' Grapefruit League games beginning Thursday against the Boston Red Sox, which is good news for the Triple-A pitchers working in the minor league games.
The Marlins' young star outfielders, working through spring ailments, both homered Tuesday to help the New Orleans Zephyrs beat the Memphis Redbirds 12-5 at Jupiter, Fla., improving the Z's spring mark to 3-0.

Stanton played his first game in the outfield since straining his right quadriceps muscle in an exhibition game against the University of Miami on Feb. 27, and clubbed a three-run homer in the first inning to put the Zephyrs ahead. The right fielder also singled and walked in four plate appearances.

Coghlan again led off and played center field, and blasted a three-run homer of his own in the second inning to boost the Zephyrs' lead to 6-1.

Ryan Curry added two hits, including an RBI double, and Neil Sellers had a two-run double as the Zephyrs outhit the Redbirds 14-8.

Mark McLemore started for New Orleans and went three innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out four and walked two.

Wade Korpi, who pitched three perfect innings in his only appearance with the Zephyrs last season, worked two innings and was credited with the win. Jay Buente pitched two scoreless frames, and Dustin Richardson closed out the victory.

The Zephyrs will travel to Port St. Lucie on Wednesday to face the Buffalo Bisons.

Not really a frown, more of a "oh well, I'm not surprised."
