  • Marlins Interested in Reacquiring Castillo [Luiy signs with Philly]

JUPITER -- The Marlins have spoken internally about reacquiring former second baseman Luis Castillo, who was released on Friday by the New York Mets.

Castillo, who has one year remaining on his contract, is owed $6 million, which the Mets will now eat.

The 35-year-old second baseman played 10 seasons with the Marlins from 1996-2005 and won three Gold Gloves and two World Series rings with the team.

The Marlins have discussed Castillo as an option at second base if Matt Dominguez doesn't make the club and Omar Infante is moved to third base.

If he gets his BABIP back up to about .300, he can probably put up a .275/.360/.335 type of line, which isn't good, but if he can be at least neutral defensively (recent returns on his D are mixed), he's probably a better option than the Helms/Bonifacio/Murphy platoon of suck if Dominguez fails.

      I'm down.

        Louie Back to Miami?

According to Joe Cappozi's twitter, the fish are considering bringing back Luis Castillo. Castillo would play 2B and Infante 3B until Matty D is ready. I am not against this.

#Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria is a big fan of Luis Castillo, who's close with IF coach Perry Hill.

Dominguez hasn't exactly been lighting it up.

A lot of people say Luis's D is awful.. I'm sure he wasn't trying very hard playing for the Muts.. I'm not against this let Matty go down to NOLA and get his hitting on track and then bring him up.

Another thing about Luis is he is good at working the count and can get timely base hits.. Fits in nicely to his old slot the 2 spot in the order.

I'm all for this. I'm completely biased though since Luis is probably among one of my 2 or 3 favorite Marlins of all time.

Because he may actually be able to hit the ball, something Castillo is pretty much done with even if he draws some walks here and there. Ozzie was pretty good in AA last year even if he was getting premo pitches as teams were presumably pitching around Stanton, and he looked pretty good in September (I acknowledge the amazingly low 40 something PA, but still).

I don't think it's crazy to think he'd be a .250-.270 / .310-.330 / .350-.400 kind of guy immediately, and he has a good defensive reputation. That wouldn't be terrible at 2B for right now if they want to groom Dominguez some more (which they should).

And a side note, check out Castillo's amazing 2000 stat line. 101 runs, 17 RBI, .806 OPS. Gotta be lowest RBI total for anyone with 500+ AB and an .800+ OPS history of baseball.
