    Could do something like

40+40+40 (Player can opt out of contract like a-rod/sabathia)+25+25+25

Give him massive cash for first 3 years, and will likely opt out after for more cash in free agency. The only problem is, if he can't make more than 3 years/75 mil in free agency then it'd be an albatross for us. big risk but also big reward

Sure. No sense in debating numbers as it will never happen, but it's absolutely the way to do it. Give him something he would never expect for 3-4 seasons up front, and give him freedom or a ridiculously low back end of the deal to account for all the up front cash.

I stated in another thread, I would rather keep some in the coffers for Hanley and JJ.

This was more Festa's idea than I so I won't take credit for it, but I think that frontloading the contract with incredible money could be a very good idea. Then hope that he loves Miami enough after 4-5 seasons that he stays on at a more reasonable rate for his age under an extension.
God would be expecting a first pitch breaking ball in the dirt because humans love to disappoint him.

It allows the Marlins more flexibility when it comes time to pay the rest of the team and makes his down years less painful. Pikop and I went through an entire scenario last week, but the Marlins would need to spend ~$100-110 million on payroll. It is something that would reshape the league and the sports culture in South Florida. Internationally, Miami is already the capital of Latin America, why not extend that into the baseball world?

For Pujols, getting more money upfront also provides some protection for when the top rates go up sometime next decade (inevitable). Front loading allows him to pay the current rates, invest the money in capital and avoid income tax rates increasing from 35% to whatever the 2022 rate is (50% is not crazy).

Might be the xanax or something but would y'all be against Jose Reyes coming over and playing 2b. Mets have so many problems he might walk after the year. I think he'd be a nice fit if he wouldnt mind playing 2b depending on his salary demamnds. i mean something like 4/40/44 would be nice going into the new stadium. Of course this is if Cogs works out in CF.

If Reyes is back to normal this year, which he should be because he is theoretically healthy, I would expect him to be able to get a contract worth double what you project. If not triple. Someone would give him 6-7 years at atleast $15 million a season. He may rival Werths deal. I don't think he'd get to Crawford.
