that olney quote doesn't make sense if they view him as a 6-7mil per yr player.. 30mil brings the contract to 18mil which is 6mil per yr..

          No, he's right.

The quote says the Marlins might want MORE than 30 mil, but view him as a 6-7 mil player.

If they view him as a 6-7 mil player, they'd want 27-30 mil eaten.

By them needing texas to eat more, that means they view him as less than a 6 mil player.

I mean, the differences are small and basically negligible but still.

I thought I was interpreting that right and they said there would be no math lol

That is what I believed ARavs to be saying. But just because they view him as a 6-7mil player doesn't mean they go to Texas and say, welp fellers, we think he is worth this much and we would prefer not to get the better of this deal, so we wouldn't want anything more than enough money to bring his salary to either 6 or 7 per year.

You use it as a bargaining chip.. They may not pay more than 30mil but may cost us less in terms of prospects or the quality.

As for Pujols, I believe Colorado will be a serious dark horse if he hits free agency.
If the Marlins were to acquire Young, I kinda thought that'd be what happens rather than Young at 3B with Infante at 2B.

That said, I was thinking the same things as was posted in Biz Z's post with the article from the Sun Sentinel - even if the Marlins and Rangers could work out a deal, what would be the incentive (besides getting out of Texas) for Young to approve a trade to the Marlins with Dominguez waiting in the wings.

Is Infante's contract for just this year? A thought that comes to mind - assuming Infante's contract is just this year, and that Young approves a trade to the Fish, acquire Young, as mentioned above have him at 2B and Infante at 3B (or even vice-versa for this scenario), give Dominguez more seasoning in Triple-A for [most of] this year. Next year, Infante departs, clearing room for Dominguez and Young to be in the same infield for the final 2 years of Young's contract.

Otherwise, to me it seems if Dominguez was made the 3rd baseman now, Young would be trading to a team to fill exactly the same role (minus the DHing opportunities) as he would be in Texas - spot starter, bat off the bench, etc., etc.

Those are my thoughts anyway - whether their any good or not, I dunno...

Infante is playing on an option for 2011 on the last of his Braves contract I believe.

At work so can't pull stats, but briefly, I'm pretty sure Young is something amazingly bad like -20 on runs at 2B which is why they moved him to 3B in the first place. He's not good at 3B but he's passable. I don't think he would move over to 2B in any circumstance here on out.

And really, the Marlins could always trade him. If Texas is eating all the salary, he's very retradeable.

If I remember correctly he was bad at SS and average at 2b and slightly below avg at 3b. And at 6 mill for Young for 3 yearss at 2b I'm fine with it if they are sure CC can handle CF.

So did Derek Jeter. Palmeiro won one at 1st even after only playing like 20 games there. The Gold Glove is a joke nowadays.

Yadier Molina should have 2 or 3 more than he has, as well.
