Fish looking at Young per K.Rosenthal

We heard earlier today that the Rangers could start exploring new trade scenarios involving Michael Young. Young can block deals to 21 clubs, but has said he would consider trades on a case by case basis, so Texas might start calling teams on Young's no-trade list. Here's the latest on the Rangers infielder, with the most recent updates up top:

    * The Marlins are interested in Young, major-league sources tell Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. However, one source with knowledge of the talks described the possibility of a deal as a "real reach." For a deal to happen, Texas would need to assume most of the $48MM left over the final three years of Young’s contract. Young also would need to waive his partial no-trade clause for the as the Marlins are not one of the eight teams on his list. The article notes that Young, a California native, would probably prefer a trade to the Dodgers or even the Rockies.
    * The Rangers are talking to at least two teams and the Rockies aren't one of them, according to Heyman (on Twitter).
    * Multiple teams are still interested in Young and there's a 50% chance the Rangers deal him, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (Twitter links). Young could end up staying in Texas, though the Rangers have made some progress on potential deals.

So Texas gonna eat his salary or something? (a lot of it)

He would also have to waive his no-trade clause for Florida.

I'm in if they eat the salary and he plays 2nd instead of 3rd

Depending on who is going where and the money being exchanged, I could potentially be for this pipe-dream

Anyone know what they're looking for, player wise?

I doubt he rejects a trade to the fish, he just wants out of TX.

I dunno, I can easily see him rejecting us. Especially with the Braves and Phillies in this league.

To eat most of the salary, they would want...probably James and Hand?

Depends really on how bad they want to get rid of the bad apple.

Even if they eat most of his salary (note, most, not all) I don't know if I want him for 3 years.

If they eat all his salary, then sure, the three years don't worry me.

I'd rather have Volstad and no Young than Young and no Volstad.

The Fish could always retrade him. At $6 mil per a team like St. Louis would jump all over it(they would have already if not for the Pujols situation).

I posted this in idiot town, as I can't just quit the stupidity, but it's my thoughts.

It all depends on how much Texas would eat. He's due $48 million over 3 years. He's produced WARs of 2.4, 2.4, 3.9, and 2.7 the last 4 years, and his defense is "better" than some speak of, it's better than Uggla's based on UZR (average around -6 last two years) so you can live with it if he's hitting. This isn't Cantu -15 bad at 3B. I find it very likely he is a 2+ WAR player over the rest of his deal which is the important part. That's not mindblowing, but that ain't bad. What's a 2+ WAR player worth at 3B, at minimum, probably around $6 million per year that guys like Brandon Inge and Casey Blake make. And Young has more upside cause he can hit for average, even with looking at his scary Road splits of recent history (2010 Road .679, but 2009 Road .848 OPS).

If Texas throws in $10 million per year, and I'm not joking literally that much, I'd trade them Leo Nunez (who kind of makes sense for them so they can shift Feliz into the rotation seemlessly) and some spare parts (very low moderate ceiling relievers). This would create $2.5 additional towards this year's payroll which isn't killer and you just slide Badenhop/Sanabia into the last bullpen spot. And come next year, Michael Young will be easily tradeable if his price tag is $6 million a season for 2 years, and if not, talk about an excellent stop gap so Dominguez can hang in AAA for another year. And new stadium money can eat that as the entire team is going to be stupid cheap outside of arbitration years and there really isn't any prime free agents to spend mega bucks on next year (because we're not signing Pujols).

This makes a lot of sense at $30 million bucks. It's all a question of how desperate they are to dump. If they can get a good reliever and another young arm or two that could slot into their bullpen in 2-3 years, shaving $18 million of Michael Young starts looking really good on paper. Remember how the Marlins got better trading Preston Wilson and Charles Johnson for part of Mike Hampton's Contract and Tim Spooneyberger. Shit happens.

This would put us out of the Pujols sweepstakes.
