I think he means "aside from" there. "Besides" pretty clearly has a connotation that he did not do that thing. But I think he obviously means that he has worked on his swing along with other things.

besides putting in extra time working on his swing. He hiked his pants up to expose his socks. When that didn’t work, he lowered them back down, hoping that would do the trick.
