  • Is Anibal Sanchez the Key to Making the Postseason?

Not from a performance standpoint, but ability to finish the season.

His performance last year after labrum surgery was a minor miracle. Including his 2009 rehab stints, he had an 82 IP jump between 2009 and 2010. It is 109 IP if we exclude rehab starts. 195 IP is also the most Anibal has thrown in his career.

If Anibal is down for an extended period of time, barring someone blowing up, I don't see the current roster being legitimate contenders. The same can be said about losing JJ, Javy and Nolasco but I'd put all three behind Anibal in the most likely to suffer a foreseeable injury.

I don't understand how a number goes up when you exclude something.

Yeah I still don't understand how he was not shut down at the end of the season.

I personally am more worried about Javy than Anibal.

In all honesty, if any of the projected starters, both pitchers and position players, go down for an extended period, we're screwed. We have almost no starting pitching depth, our bench is pathetic and we don't have anything in the upper minors to help.

That's fine, but Anibal is a larger risk than others and therefore is worth pointing out.
God would be expecting a first pitch breaking ball in the dirt because humans love to disappoint him.

We will likely not make the playoffs if Anibal is hurt for an extended time.

That does not make him the key.

The key to the playoffs is Hanley and to a slightly lesser extent, JJ.

In terms of the pitching, I disagree. With the exception of JJ, almost all the pitchers, both rotation and bullpen are followed closely on the depth chart by someone relatively equally capable.

I think the key is Hanley going back to 2009, JJ staying healthy, Stanton taking another step and LoMo holding steady.

Chris Volstad being a competent starter would help too.
