Well, he probably is the type of guy who'll put up an ERA in the mid to high 4's forever when he does click, so maybe he really has clicked and will not go back to the mid 5's.
If he's gonna put up the September numbers, then hey, cool, but people with ERAs in the mid 4's and 1.40ish WHIPs have to compete for spots in the rotation. At least they do on other franchises that envision themselves as contenders.

If his final seven outings were any indication, Volstad should be in the rotation to stay. He went 5-0 with a 3.75 ERA, including a shutout of the Cardinals on Sept. 20.
Better? Or are you going to bash a 3.75 ERA, too?

But he really wasn't good, at least if you want to look at ERA/WHIP/xFIP/Kper9 and other, well, numbers that actually measure pitching performance.

Funny that we use the final 5 and not the final 6, because with the final 6 he's got the mid 4's ERA, since he gave up 6 ERs to the Nats in 5 IP.
Also, two of those final 5 outings:
@ PHI (9/7): 5 IP, 5 ER, 3 HR allowed
@ WSH (9/12): 4.2 IP, 5 ER
In actuality, he had an outstanding start against St. Louis, and two very good starts against Milwaukee and Pittsburgh to close the year. So if he's "locked up" a rotation spot, that's why. Becuase of three starts. That is silly silly silly.
Otherwise, he was bad Volstad for the month of September. And in August, he was the fifth starter type that shouldn't be banished to AAA but should not be guaranteed a rotation spot.

Re-read that comment I posted. It says "last seven starts", not last 5.Last edited by THE_REAL_MIBS; 10-04-2010, 05:34 PM.

We can all agree that his last 3 starts of the season were very encouraging, but this will mean nothing if he can't carry it into 2011.

If something just clicked, and it was his release point, they would be able to see that.
A release point is not same crazy intangible thing.
Also, I love when Mibs uses quotes from coaches and thinks it means stuff.
