To me, what I care more about what this means from a development standpoint. Everyone looks at the big name FAs woo woo but you wanna win, you develop it unless you're packing 150+m payroll. In terms of deals that was already sold to me by keeping the Hanley and JJs. Yeah, Uggla is better than the Cody's and Cantu's complimentary pieces but he's far from being in those two range. He's not easily replaceable but he's not a difference maker; He has way too many holes in his game. Shelling out big money for the Ugglas of the world? I'd prefer we don't do that and I let out a sigh of relief he told us no. That 12m is spent a lot better spread out over 5 guys than 1.

But if this shows we're willing to pay money, guess what? No more not offering arbitration cuz we can't afford draft picks. No more picking guys because they'll go for slot money. No more total money spent in the draft ranking at the bottom of the lists.

If this is true, then that should be true. And when that is proven, I'll be incredibly happy.

I love Uggla but thats the best contract he gets on an open market. Maybe he can get a 5th year somewhere but seriously that 5th year is gonna be maybe another 5 mil on that contract.

The team will be better without Uggla if that money is spent elsewhere and you get some equal value for him in a trade.

What I would like to see if Uggla is moved is more quality pitching and just use Doming and Boner at 3rd and 2nd. This is provided both are excellent defenders like I've heard. Removing Uggla and replacing him with CC doesn't improve defense that much.

Uggla will play second (third, fourth, or fifth) fiddle on pretty much every team in MLB that can afford more than 4/$48 million.

Well I think that's what I meant overall; I don't think anyone expects them to go hog wild in FA, nor should we. But the fact they're willing to step up to an above-market contract on Uggla, who, like you said, isn't in Hanley or JJ territory in both talent and upside, seems to indicate they will be less stingy overall.

A person I know who isn't even that in to baseball said "what an idiot" when I told them that Uggla turned down 4/48.

What if he gets hurt? You don't turn down fitty mill brah!
                There's No jOOj In Team.

I stand by my prediction of Uggla to A's for Gio / Braden.

4/48 almost certainly gets you V-Mart.

Maybe that's the route to go....

Probably cheaper than that, and @ 3 yrs.

Here's a little more from an update to the same article I posted earlier.

Uggla's agent, Terry Bross of Gaylord Sports Management, said Monday that Uggla's preference is to stay with the Marlins.

"Dan is not angling to get out of Florida," said Bross, who did not give specifics on negotiations.

Uggla is holding out for 6 private charter flights to whatever bench Cody Ross is on next year.

I would trade him to KC just to piss him off.
