I'm happy that they did something instead of nothing and only lost RVH.

Like Ramp said, it's a dice roll.

I think it was actually the other way around, Marlins wanted him, Ohman didn't want to come here.

I like it. RVH was out of options and would have been on the chopping block in the spring anyway.

We're getting something to help us try to make a run at it for a guy who won't be on the team this time next year anyway. It's fine, not great, not bad.

              Indeed.

Previous page had lots of whining for the sake of whining.

I forgot about RVH being out of options, very good point on that.

You don't think they'd stuff him in the pen?

SAN DIEGO -- Improved play since the All-Star break had the Marlins thinking about adding rather than doing much subtracting over the past few days.

Minutes before Saturday's non-waiver Trade Deadline, the club obtained lefty reliever Will Ohman from the Orioles for right-hander Rick VandenHurk, who has spent almost the entire season at Triple-A New Orleans.
The deal was announced shortly after the 4 p.m. ET Deadline.
It was Florida's second trade in three days. On Thursday, when the club was still in San Francisco, infielder Jorge Cantu was dealt to the Rangers for pitching prospects Evan Reed and Omar Poveda.
"Since we made the trade with Jorge on Thursday, we've only had discussions about adding, specifically in the bullpen," Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said. "We didn't really have any discussions as we came up to the Deadline about moving people off this team. We wanted to try to add. We did in the bullpen."
In recent days -- specifically on Friday -- a number of clubs inquired about outfielder Cody Ross.
"We believe in these guys. They've done great since the break. We have some ground to make up," Beinfest said. "The way to show that is to not take people off the team, but to add. That's what we've done today."
Since the All-Star break, the Marlins are 10-5 after they beat the Padres, 4-2, on Friday. The club is 52-51 and 7 1/2 games behind the Braves in the National League East entering Saturday's games.
Ohman, who turns 33 on Aug. 13, brings a second lefty to the bullpen, as he joins Taylor Tankersley.
Left-handed hitters are batting .226 (14-for-62) with one homer and eight RBIs this season off Ohman.
With Baltimore this year, Ohman appeared in 51 games, while striking out 29 and walking 18 in 30 innings.
Ohman is making $1.35 million this season, and he has about $474,000 remaining on his deal.
The Marlins tried to sign Ohman as a free agent after the 2008 season, when he appeared in 83 games for Atlanta. But he went to the Dodgers that year.
"We talked to Ohman a few years ago when he was a free agent, and he ultimately signed with the Dodgers," Beinfest said. "We saw him a lot when he was with the Braves, when he had a spectacular year. He's aggressive. He's been in this division with the Braves. We thought he was a good fit."
VandenHurk, 24, saw action in two games for the Marlins this season. The right-hander from the Netherlands has appeared in 35 big league games, 32 as a starter.
He broke in with the Marlins in 2007, and in '09, he also pitched for his native country in the World Baseball Classic.
VanderHurk was 8-4 with a 4.68 ERA in 19 starts for New Orleans.
"As far as Vandy goes, there is a lot of potential there. We didn't really see opportunity for him in the near future," Beinfest said. "Hopefully, this will be a good fit for him moving forward."
Inconsistent in the first half, the Marlins had been on the fence as to which direction they'd go before the Trade Deadline.
In recent days, feeler calls picked up from other teams who wanted Ross.
"In fairness to the process, a lot of stuff is going on," Beinfest said. "People call on our guys and we call on their guys. It's fair game. That's just the nature of this time of year."
Gaining ground will be difficult with so many teams in the mix. Yet the Marlins are 6 1/2 back in the NL Wild Card race entering Saturday, so they still feel confident they have a shot. And they haven't ruled out a run in the NL East. The Phillies are heading to South Florida for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday.
"You've heard this answer from me a million times: It's the NL East," Beinfest said. "It's never easy. It's always tough. We have some ground to make up. The schedule shows we have some games with the Braves. We have the Phillies coming to town once we leave here. We have to play good baseball. We've dug ourselves into a little bit of a hole."

I think if they liked him he'd have been in the pen this year after the pen turned to shit (instead of the Jorge Sosas, Scott Stricklands, ect of the world), as both thinking he's good and to see if he's worth the roster spot next year.

I think Hurk was overrated round these parts. He was fun but I've got no heartburn about moving him. Also, starting pitching depth only matters when it's good starting pitchers. I don't think Rick would have ever been an effective ML starter, so I think that's irrelevant.

Pretending to actually be a contender and trading one of the good young arms in your system for an old crusty, rental LOOGY...just a terrible move.
