How Bad Was the Lebron James Signing for the Marlins Front Office?

What is the basis for this thread? Where did it come from? What are we supposed to be arguing? Why is this worthy of discussion. What does Michael Jackson have to do with anything?

You built an awfully lousy foundation for a thread.

The basis of this thread: The Miami Heat just signed Lebron James. What will the impact (if any) be on the other major sports teams in South Florida (specifically the Marlins).

Where did it come from: The Miami Heat signed Lebron James.


What are we supposed to be arguing: Will the signing of Lebron James be a good thing for the organization (increased awareness in South Florida sports, possibly encouraging the current Marlins ownership to expand it's payroll etc) or will it be a bad thing (less people attend Marlins games because they're spending what little recreational sports viewing money they have on the new Heat).


Why is this worthy of a discussion: For starters, this is a Marlins message board. This is a website where you would think it would be safe to discuss all things Marlins.

It's the All Star break. There are no games going on so I was just trying to stir up some discussion on the impact of the Heat signing.


What does Michael Jackson have to do with anything: The popcorn eating image is a widely used, fun internetz thing that eagerly anticipates future posts on the topic at hand.

Lunchables and U know it and Todd aside, I don't think it was very good for future ticket sales at the new stadium.

If, say, a medium sized business or law firm was considering buying a suite at New Marlins Park or a suite at AAA, they're buying one at AAA now if they can get it. This won't apply to mega corporations, who are buying at both and always were buying at both, but for those out there who were going to choose between the Heat or Marlins, well, they're all going Heat. Same thing with corporate sponsorships and advertising money. If there was ever a tossup between Marlins and Heat, the company is going Heat if they can still afford what's likely to be increased rates (and with the increased rates the venture is still profitable.)

And if you subscribe to the basic theory that people have a finite amount of disposable income on a yearly basis and that they choose to allocate that income in a way that maximizes their utility and so on and so forth and economics I don't feel like getting into and shit, those people who set aside a certain amount of money for entertainment are more likely to spend that money on the Heat than the Marlins. Thus affecting ticket sales in a negative way for the Fish. Of course, it could work a bit both ways, in that people who no longer can afford/can find Heat tickets will go to Marlins games....but I dunno. That seems kinda iffy.

But the LeBron signing could be marginally good for attracting free agents, provided Loria's still willing to spend money, because Miami does look like a more attractive town to live now that the Three Best Friends In The Whole Wide World are probably gonna be really good at basketball for the next few years, and when they're good at basketball celebs go to the games and party in Miami, and Miami seems like a sexier place to live.

Finally, the lightbulb in the thread title pleases me.

I guess if Lebron James buys season tickets it could affect the Marlins. Or if Lebron takes the next step and just buys the Fish outright and runs a promotion where Loria has to run suicides around the bases while fans pelt him with autographed balls of former Marlins he refused to pay.

And I think this is going to hurt the Marlins more from a PR perspective than financially. They were in a position to be the center of attention in Miami for an entire year and now that may not happen. The Heat may dominate the sports news cycle for three months of the '12 baseball season.

By 2012 the city and fans will have had 2 seasons of WJB. I also see the Marlins being a very competitive team in 2012 and with the new stadium I see the Marlins having no problem generating interest in the team and stadium. This stadium is going to be kick ass and people are going to want to go.

I agree with this. I think it is harmful because it shows the "spend money, win at all costs" Heat in stark contract to the budget-minded, bargain-basement, Wes-Helms-impact-signing Fish.

The PR stuff can hurt the advertising. If someone's thinking about advertising at Marlins Stadium or AAA, the impression of the Marlins as a small budget, nickel and dime type who won't win and get the exposure of the Heat is going to affect their decision to advertise. Same thing if a local company is considering advertising with Heat broadcasts or Marlins broadcasts. I know the Marlins have outstanding local TV ratings, but I'd expect the Heat ratings would increase and, again, if the potential advertiser is comparing the Heat TV/radio audience vs. the Marlins TV/radio audience they may choose to advertise with the Heat and their broadcast partners if they are only able to choose one option. And those advertising dollars affect the value of the TV/radio contract for the Marlins.

And yeppers, if nothing else Lebronica makes the Marlins look even more like a minor league franchise than they did before.

In a lot of towns, I think it'd be an interesting thing to watch. In Miami, I don't think it matters that much. Right now, there's really nothing the Marlins can do to draw. When they get in the new stadium, I think they'll be treated just like the Heat. If they win, people will come. If they don't, people won't.

I will enjoy when the Yankees come to town and all the Heat fans on here get to watch LeBron show up to the games in his Yankees cap and root for them.
