We could go old-school A's style. Gaby at third, Cogs at second, Montero at first, Logan in LF. If Baker is still behind the plate, my god our defense would be amazing

JoeFrisaro: #Marlins Yanks scout on hand in Arizona, as has been noted, maybe to watch Nolasco. Girardi, of course, managed Ricky in '06.

If he saw Ricky last night, maybe we could get Montero.

        Could have watched Haren too.

FoxSports.com's Jon Paul Morosi says that the Phillies, Dodgers, Reds, White Sox, Angels, and Yankees all had scouts in attendance for last night's Dan Haren-Ricky Nolasco matchup, though it's unclear how many (or if any) were there specifically to watch the righthanders.

With seven strong innings in the Marlins' 3-2 victory over Arizona on Friday night, Ricky Nolasco tied All-Star teammate Josh Johnson for the team lead with nine victories.

With the win, Nolasco knows he increased his trade value, if the Marlins decide to make moves in advance of the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline.

"We have a really good clubhouse here. I feel the same way as a lot of other guys: We don't want to get broken up,' he said.

"Obviously, I don't want to, either. I've liked the organization since I've been here. This team can win ballgames if we stay together.'

The Marlins entered Saturday at 41-45, trailing Atlanta by 10 games in the NL East.

Manager Edwin Rodriguez said players are aware that the organization could decide during the All-Star break, which starts Monday, whether the team has a realistic chance at the playoffs.

"When we lost that series in Atlanta and we were heading to L.A. (Sunday night), they were talking about it. They were talking about we have to take two out of three in L.A., we have to come to Arizona and take at least three out of four,' he said.

"Just having those kinds of conversations, they're very aware of what's going on and there's some urgency on their part.'

With Cliff Lee off the market, Nolasco would rise to the upper tier of starting pitchers if the Marlins actively shop him.

"We understand the business of the game,' Nolasco said. "All we can do is take it a game at a time.'

We can't take a series from a team 20 games under .500, I guess come next week they will decide we're sellers. It would be nice to trade Dan for a ML ready SP, and Nate Rob for some prospects. Also our bp has seemed fine as of late, last 8.0 IP 0 ER 0 R, this is excluding Tim Wood offcourse.

Larry Beinfest: It’s “hard to foresee” current Florida Marlins roster getting on a hot streak

                      by Joe Capozzi
Marlins baseball ops president Larry Beinfest just spoke with reporters about the first half of the season. I’ll have story on his comments later but here’s a quick snapshot.

He said the baseball ops people have already had conversations about the direction of the team and whether it will change heading into the July 31 nonwaiver trading deadline.

“We’re just having a tough time and it’s very frustratinig,” he said.

“Will we be active? Yes, always and it’s already starting. The chatter has picked up in the last week. Teams now have a pretty good idea of who they are and what they’re going to be heading into the break. I would have liked to have seen a run here on this road (trip) but were just kind of.. not giving us a sustained streak.

“We’ll see. Id like to believe that streak is coming, but weve been waiting for it and it has been a while and it hasn’t come.”

Asked if the current roster had been given enough of a chance and maybe it was time to “tweak” the roster, Beinfest said: “I don’t know about tweaking it but if things aren’t working the way you’d like them to work, tweaking is obviously an option.

“You can say ‘I’m patient, I’m patient, I’m patient’ and all of a sudden the season is over. That’s the evaluation process we’re going through right now. It’s a good group, a lot of good players. They’ve been a pleasure to be around but the bottom line nobody is happy to be under 500 as we head into the break.

“We have some people we think are ready that can help is we wanted tweak, if we wanted to make a trade or two. I don’t think were gonna force anything. Now we’re 18 months away from the new (ballpark)so we have to keep an eye on that as well. We want to get or core, our base that we think is gonna head into the building and start to look forward.

“We’re not writing of the season. You can get hot, things can happen — the old Colorado Rockies thing. It’s just been frustrating because we haven’t seen that coming yet and it’s hard to foresee it at this point.”

My impression from listening to #Marlins Beinfest is they'll do something before deadline (Cantu? Uggla?) but prob. not Nolasco.

PHOENIX — Don't expect a fire sale, but the Marlins are open to making roster changes by the July 31 trade deadline after a "disappointing" and "frustrating' first half of the season.

"I don't know about tweaking (the roster), but if things aren't working the way you'd like them to work, tweaking is obviously an option,' Baseball Operations President Larry Beinfest said before the Marlins closed out the first half with a 2-0 win over the Diamondbacks.

"It's a good group, a lot of good players. They've been a pleasure to be around, but the bottom line is, nobody is happy to be under .500 as we head into the break.'

The Marlins are 42-46 and 10 games behind the Braves in the National League East. Six teams are in front of them in the wild-card race.

"There's a lot of teams ahead of us in the wild card and we certainly have not trended the right way into the break,' he said. "We haven't gotten hot. We've been waiting to get hot all year and it hasn't happened.'

Beinfest said the baseball operations staff has already begun discussions on options for improving the roster after the All Star break.

"You can say, 'I'm patient, I'm patient, I'm patient' and then all of a sudden the season is over. That's the evaluation process we're going through right now,' Beinfest said.

"We're not writing off the season by any means. We still have a lot of games to play, but the reality of it is we're not gaining ground, we're losing ground."

Beinfest said first baseman Logan Morrison and left-handed starter Sean West are among minor league players who could see action with the Marlins in the coming weeks. Morrison has been playing some left field for Class AAA New Orleans.

Beinfest didn't suggest that any trades were imminent. If the Marlins do make trades, they're more likely to move a position player than a starting pitcher such as Ricky Nolasco or Nate Robertson.

Third baseman Jorge Cantu, a free agent after the season, and second baseman Dan Uggla and center fielder Cody Ross — who both have one more year of arbitration — are considered the three likeliest to be dealt if the Marlins decide to go that route.

"It's very hard to trade starting pitching because you need to either get it back in a trade or you have to have some type of plan to re-acquire it, and that's very expensive. We like to grow our own starting pitching and probably keep it,' he said.

The Marlins made one change on June 23, firing manager Fredi Gonzalez. He was replaced with Edwin Rodriguez, who has guided the Marlins to an 8-10 record into the break.

The Marlins haven't won or lost more than four in a row this season.

The road trip they concluded Sunday illustrated how their season has gone: They won two of three from the Mets in Puerto Rico, lost two of three in Atlanta, won two of three in Los Angeles then split four games in Arizona.

"I think we need to be open to everything at this point because we haven't had that run,' Beinfest said.

"We don't usually use (the term) 'buy or sell.' I think the team is capable of winning, but if we want to tweak something because it's just not working or we think it could be more productive, then I think we're going to look at it, and that's where we're at right now.'

The Marlins open the second half of the season Friday with a three-game series at Sun Life Stadium against the Nationals.

"You can get hot. Things can happen, the old Colorado Rockies thing,' Beinfest said. "It's just been frustrating because we haven't seen that coming yet and it's hard to foresee it at this point.'

The nonwaiver trade deadline is less than three weeks away.

"Teams now have a pretty good idea of who they are and what they're going to be heading into the break,' he said.

"We have some people we think are ready that can help if we wanted tweak, if we wanted to make a trade or two. I don't think were gonna force anything.'

                        THE ROCKIES’ NEXT MOVIE: CANTU?

The Marlins have made infielder Jorge Cantu and outfielder Cody Ross available, major-league sources say, but are holding off — for now — on second baseman Dan Uggla and right-hander Ricky Nolasco.

Cantu, a potential free agent, would be ideal for the Rockies, an even better fit than Uggla, who likely will earn $10 million in arbitration next season. The Rockies want a right-handed, run-producing corner bat, and are unsettled at first without Todd Helton, who is on the disabled list with lower back stiffness.

The Rockies discussed trading infielder Clint Barmes and a prospect for Uggla last offseason. But if they added Cantu, they could use Barmes and Jonathan Herrera at second after Troy Tulowitzki returns from the DL in August.

The downside of adding Cantu is that it might force the team to part with Melvin Mora, who is well-regarded by his teammates and has a .359 on-base percentage since May 28.

Cantu would cost the Rockies alot less than Uggla. Prolly Rex Brothers or another young RP and low level prospect for him. The Yankees were looking at Ross as there 4th OF but no clue if still on him. A prospect or 2 low level ones would get him.

Telling u guys pay attention to the White Sox. If they can't get Adam Dunn or Oswalt, watch for them to put a package together for Nolasco and Uggla(Long as he is Ok with playing other positions than 2B)

If Rox give Rex Brothers for Cantu whoever is running that ship should be fired. I'll be happy though.

No clue if they would I am just saying that's what we would prolly ask for.Plus Cantu will end up a Type B FA so they get a pick back since they do offer arbitration and Also it helps when u have minor league depth,u know when u actually draft guys based on talent and not the fact they will sign cheap.
