But they're still in it!!!!11! Only 6.5 games back in the wild card with 6 teams to jump, and 7.5 back in the division with 3 teams to jump!

      • Doesn't make much sense to me. Maybin is just about healthy again... you could ride it out with Boner for a week or so and then let Maybin play out the rest of the season.... especially if Ross can get you a couple arms that contribute to the bullpen for the next couple years.

Two teams that inquired on #Marlins' Ross were told he is unavailable. I'll believe it after deadline passes. The Fish often surprise. #MLB

I personally love Cody, great player and a fan favorite, but he's expendable, getting too expensive, and possibly blocking maybin.

Take the PR hit from the fans and get a bullpen arm for 2011

          • He isn't worth the money that's coming to him this offseason and I believe we will non-tender him and get zip for him.

And then I will curse a lot.

That remains to be seen. Chances are, Loria would use the increase in JJ and Hanley's salaries and mold the team around them in the cheapass way he always has, but it would still look like a net increase in monies spent without really changing how they operate financially at all.

Riding out the season with an all rookie outfield, and next year. I get what all of you are saying and don't really disagree, but at the same time if Ross being here helps the other rookie outfielders (limp) through the rest of the season, he's worth it for whatever grandfathering reason there is for this season. And honestly, if you look at free agents for next year, Cody may not be worth $6 million in arbitration, but if we're forced to spend money pursuant to MLB demands, he may be one of the "best bad investments" out there on a 1 year deal to get over some threshold.

I just understand their reluctance if everyone is offering Hermida type deals for him. He's still useful, unlike Hermida or Cantu, so we need something tangible for him or just wait and see how things go down with the kids. Always waiver period too. He's a good candidate to get selected or clear opening up other options.

                    • Cody Ross still available
The Marlins aren't going to force anything, but for the right price, they will trade outfielder Cody Ross by Saturday's 4 p.m. ET Trade Deadline.

The Braves and Red Sox remain teams interested in Ross, who is batting .272 with nine homers and 52 RBIs.

Several other clubs could be in the mix, and the Marlins are on the fence of which direction to go with the outfielder.

One source said it may go down to whether the Marlins win or loss on Friday at the Padres.

Ross, who is making $4.45 million in his second season of arbitration, does not fit into the team's long-range plans.

The Marlins on Thursday traded Jorge Cantu, and the team cleared all but $600,000 of the $2.2 million that remains on his $6 million deal.

A prime reason Cantu was dealt was because he didn't fit into the club's future.

The Marlins have several outfielders they are wanting to get a look at, including Bryan Petersen, Emilio Bonifacio and Cameron Maybin, who is in Triple-A New Orleans.

When the Marlins traded Cantu, the team noted that it was looking to position the roster for now and into the future. In 2012, they move into a retractable-roof ballpark, and they want to be as competitive as possible. Already, 20-year-old Mike Stanton is gaining valuable playing time in right field, and he projects to be a future star.

By moving Cantu on Thursday, prospect Logan Morrison was given the job in left field. The Marlins have high hopes for Morrison, who promises to be a centerpiece player in the years to come.

                            • If Cody Ross gets traded, Florida Marlins would have a very inexperienced outfield

                              by Joe Capozzi
I was told a few days ago that the Marlins don’t plan to trade Cody Ross before Saturday’s trading deadline (4 pm EDT), but never say never.

Apprently, Cody is generated buzz this afternoon on the trade rumor mill. Jasyon Stark tweeted that the Braves are going hard for Ross but may not get a deal done by the deadline.

The Red Sox and Dodgers also have interest, according to reports.

Unless the Marlins got a replacement in return for Ross, the likeliest candidate to take over in center field is Cameron Maybin.

Keep in mind that Maybin returned to action on Tuesday for Class AAA New Orleans and went 3-for12 with a grand slam over his first three games back. Maybin, 23, had been out since July 2 with a sore left shoulder.

I guess Emilio Bonifacio could take over until Maybin is ready.

So, think about that: The Marlins would like to think they still can make a run for a playoff spot. And they would do it with an outfield of Logan Morrison, Cameron Maybin/Emilio Bonifacio and Mike Stanton. All extremely talented, especially on the corners, but extremely inexperienced.

Lots of Marlins on the field right now at Petco Park for early BP, including Cody.
