While I have mentioned Acta before, that is more to do with him fitting the modus operandi of Loria(cheap). I dont exactly prefer him as manager, but to give him a reprieve...he has never had alot to work with. He stagnated with Washington through their lean years and is gone once they finally start to bring alot of their young talent up(with more soon on the way). And now in charge of a depleted Cleveland team. It seems like he has always been in the wrong place at the wrong time. I do consider it a plus that he is still a young guy, albeit a young guy with experience, maybe making it easier for him to connect to what is still a youthful team.

As for Valentine, he is just a frustrating manager to watch. He mismanages the bullpen(which, granted, you could manage the bullpen perfectly right now for the Fish and it would still be the suck), he doesnt handle switches well, and it wasnt uncommon for him to go through a 5 game stretch with 5 different batting orders every night, even if the lineup was working properly as is. And its incredibly telling that despite his long managing career, the only endearing thing people remember about him is that stupid fucking disguise.

Well so much for that plan blowing up in their faces.

As for Bo, in the off-season he wanted a two year deal and the Marlins said no, so he went elsewhere (Arizona)

Can we be like "Hey Fredi, we just playin. You're our manager, you got punk'd" ??

Getting rid of Fredi in and of itself isnt the worst idea, as he was gone after the year most likely anyway. Not having a concrete back up plan for when it happened though, is what is just sad(almost as sad as your Plan A being Bobby Valentine).

MLB reprimanded the Marlins for not spending enough.

I can't wait to see the shit storm if the Marlins trade away Uggla, Cantu, Ross, Nunez, Nate Rob, and Helms which would effectively lower their 2010 payroll to under $36 million, meaning last year's total payroll.

After being told "don't do that!" No way. And before the stadium to piss off the fans? No way. They do have to build into the stadium.

What are they going to do next year, sign someone else?

            C Ronny Paulino $2,500,000
            1B Gaby Sanchez $420,000
            2B Chris Coghlan $600,000
3B God Knows Who $4,000,000 (save lots of money with Dominguez)
            SS Hanley Ramirez $11,000,000
            LF Logan Morrison $410,000
            CF Cameron Maybin $420,000
            RF Mike Stanton $420,000
            B Bonifaco $420,000
            B Baker $430,000
            B BP/Cousins/Raynor $410,000
            B Veteran Lefty $1,000,000
            B Veteran Righty $1,000,000

            SP Josh Johnson $7,750,000
            SP Ricky Nolasco $6,000,000
            SP Chris Volstad $430,000
            SP Anibal Sanchez $2,250,000
            SP Sean West $420,000
            RP Leo Nunez $4,000,000
            RP Clay Hensley $1,000,000
            RP Brian Sanches $430,000
            RP Vanden Hurk $420,000
            RP Whoever $410,000
RP Andrew Miller (why not) $1,400,000
            RP Whoever $410,000

            $47,950,000

That's really not a bad team on paper. Very young, but not bad and really a plausible contender if the kids all can play league average. How is MLB going to justify letting them match 2011s salary to "before the year" 2010? There is no realistic signing here to get them to "reasonable" payroll.

I can't see a total blow up. Cantu, for sure. One of Uggla and Cody, for sure. Both? Really pushing it. Leo? Really really pushing it.

Add Uggla to that team above for an additional $6 million (pecking away at veteran 3B salary), and beef up one reliever and the bench guys to $2 million players. That's "reasonable" to me.

Just can't see a total blow up. MLB will freak out and make them return revenue money. Steinbrenner will fist pump.

I am hoping to hold on to Cantu until the offseason and try to get some compensatory picks for him, as the return for him at the deadline probably wont help now or in the immediate future anyway.

Not sure about Nunez being dealt. He really has figured it out this year and it would just hurt us to deal a actually good closer when we really don't "need" to. Uggla, Cody, and Jorge, sure, why not

After the way this Bobby V thing and this entire season have gone, I kind of want to see them keep Edwin around on an interim and blow up the team, just to see exactly what MLB does*. Like, if the Marlins give MLB a giant "fuck you, we don't give a shit what you think" and just dump all their big name starts (outside of Hanley and JJ) at the deadline. Will MLB really call them out on it, or will there just be more posturing? I'd bet it's just going to be more posturing, so long as they head into 2011 with something in the $45-50 range.

*And also because, outside of dealing Uggla, that's probably the best way to position this team for 2011. And because this organizational tomfoolery has brought me to a point where Marlins-related schadenfreude has become quasi-appealing.

Without wasting my time criticizing the rest of this paragraph, I'll just address the bolded part and say that (1) that is a fucking retarded way to think about someone and is in no way telling of anything remotely related to his managerial ability* and (2) most baseball fans, and especially Mets fans, probably remember Bobby V leading the Mets to the 2000 World Series more than the disguise. Probably. I mean, that was the World fucking Series and all.

*People always remember stupid shit like mustache costumes, because it's so ri-goddamn-diculous that it will never be repeated, and they remember these things even if the person involved was good at their job. For example, what's the endearing image of Chris Webber, who was an otherwise excellent basketball player? That timeout in the Final Four. What's the endearing image of Leon Lett, who was an otherwise excellent DT on a few Super Bowl winning teams? Either the fumble in the Super Bowl against the Bills or, for some on this board, flopping around in the snow in that Thanksgiving game against the Dolphins. What do people remember about Earl Weaver and Lou Pinella? The tantrums. What do people remember about Bill Buckner, who was otherwise a very good baseball player? The error.

The point: people are fucking stupid, and what people remember about someone doesn't tell you dick about that person's actual ability to perform their job.

MLB has implied this and Lou already addressed it: return revenue sharing money. And I don't want that to happen, but that's probably what would happen if MLB really got pissed off.

Is he or isn't he? Bobby Valentine remains a candidate for the #Marlins' managerial opening, according to my high-placed source.

Despite report, Valentine still a candidate

Despite a report to the contrary, a Major League Baseball source told The Miami Herald Sunday night Bobby Valentine is still very much in the running to become the club's next manager.

SI.com, citing their own Major League source, reported Sunday afternoon the Marlins were no longer considering the 60-year old ESPN analyst for the job. When asked by The Miami Herald whether the report was accurate, Valentine said via text message, "no idea."

A longtime friend of Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, the former Rangers and Mets manager was supposed to visit South Florida this weekend to meet with Marlins executives. ESPN reported the Marlins were ready to offer him a four-year deal. Valentine, however, never made it to South Florida and the process is taking longer than expected.

But that doesn't mean he's out of the running -- or no longer the favorite. The Marlins have already interviewed interim manager Edwin Rodriguez and former third base coach Bo Porter, who is now with Arizona.
