I did not know he was still on the market.

Still maintain what I said before though, I am in favor of this move if it puts Cantu at 1st and we're not sending much more than Jiminez back to Boston.

I'd say exceptionally desperate.
I think they're hoping that someone who can just take the salary gets desperate for a corner infielder, but I'd say it's almost a certainty that he's not going back to Boston with the Sox, this is an extended audition for them to try to find a suitor.

Also, yeah, if they're spending 3 mil, do it for Smoltz or Washburn, not another corner infielder.

Well this is Boston's position players
C - Victor
1B - Youkilis
2B - Dusty
SS - Scutaro
3B - Beltre
LF - Ellsbury
CF - Cameron
RF - Drew
DH - Papi
Bench - Varitek, Hermida, Hall, and Lowrie, i.e. catcher, outfielder, corner player, and middle infielder.
That's 13. Their roster is set without Lowell. They need to keep Lowrie around as they can't count on Bill Hall to be their backup infielder. Everyone is there for other obvious reasons. This just is what it is, so I agree 100% with Swift, they are completely desperate to move him and some team is going to wind up getting Lowell and over 90% of his salary for a relative non-prospect. They still had some time to burn with that Max Ramirez deal and that was Theo working magic. Now, they are pretty much locked in.
Lowell's going. Do the Marlins think he is better than JJ2/Lamb/Murphy/BB/etc, is he worth the RP prospect you have to give them, and is he worth the $500-1,000,000 extra he will cost above the aforementioned club controlled options.
Chances are, yes if the thumb is healed even accounting he's probably a .750ish OPS bat away from Fenway. I'm into Lowell for about $1 million. I'd still like to split his PA about 50/50 with Gaby, and really I'd prefer them to get a left handed option, but if he's the best guy available for this team, lefty be damned and go for it. I'd say the same thing with Vanden Hurk and the 5 spot. Lefty be damned! Take the production over the ideal situation.
