I heard we are sending Jennings to go talk to Matt Holliday and Scott Boras afterwards

The first thing I thought was "well, sending Jennings has to mean something." Then, the more I thought, I realized it's just yet another instance of doing juuuuuust enough to make people think they made an effort but not enough to ultimately make a damn bit of difference.

Even if we never make an offer, for the 100 people that actually follow this team, 30 of them just bought into it and think Loria cares again and will bitch when he inevitably signs with the Yankees, 50 stopped reading and got themselves a sandwich, 18 still don't understand why we didn't play Miguel Olivo in center field and 2 are tjfla and fip.

I like to believe that, somewhere, in a dark place that's hopefully restricting him from contact with the general public, Kingzfan read this article and smiled.

This does not make any sense. I guarantee there is not one person in the FO who considers what the 100 people who religiously follow this team when making a personnel move as random as this.

The more likely reason he is was sent just in case the market for Chapman becomes favorable.

We should send Jennings to watch Tom Turbow, just so he can be a better person for it.

Wow talk about a shocker, Marlins offer Chapman a 5 year deal!

                  • We hear the Marlins have made a five-year offer, in the $13 million range, for ballyhooed left-handed pitcher Aroldis Chapman, a Cuban defector who has been clocked as high as 102 mph. South Florida could be appealing to him, but a few bigger-revenue teams figure to dangle more -- including Boston, which reportedly offered $15.5 million in a multiyear deal. Chapman, 21, impressed scouts in the World Baseball Classic and during a Tuesday workout in Houston.

it's not that I have a problem with them making an offer/signing the guy, especially since it's been so damn long since we made an international splash. it's just that that $13 million can go to a proven quantity named josh johnson AND give us extra money to spend and, say, keep dan uggla. unless they really think that signing what could be the biggest cuban defector ever will put asses in seats, but somehow I doubt it.

Gotta love the spirit tho 5 yr/13 mil o wait Boston has already offered 15.5 million

I thought the point of an auction(which this is)was to outbid the other guy not underbid him and say well in Boston it snows and there is not really a Cuban population there plus u might be a #5 starter or a closer

I highly doubt this kid cares where he pitches as long as he gets a ton of cash and is in the majors fairly quick

Knock down the jumping Marlin and cancel the tile order and we got an extra 4 million to give him

At least it puts us in the conversation.

At 21, he's going to have to spend at least half a season in the minors, so no team is going to give him the $20+ he and his agent are trying to get. If we come up to $16 or $17, I think we can get him (but I'm not sure if I want him).

Even though he likely won't take that offer and I'd rather see that money spent on Johnson, you've gotta like the fact that were actually making an effort here.

It's not like this money can be spent on Johnson and make a difference. This is part of a 5 year deal that likely includes some deferrals. It's not $13 million we were prepared to spend in 2010, or even 2010-2013. The bulk of the $13 million is probably payable from 2014 through god knows when.
