      Why are ban bets retarded?

If they're proposed every day or every week yes but if someone makes a ridiculous statement and someone wants to challenge it once in a while, why not?

If someone says something ridiculous we can all form the opinion that the person is a douchetard without some silly internet message board fad there to tell us what to think.

Because, in the interest of both furthering actual discussion and improving the message board, it's better for someone to actually argue as to why they have a strong point, using stuff like data, reason, logic, etc, instead of just saying "I think xxx will happen, and I'm so goddamn sure of it. Wanna know why I'm so sure? Not because I have data, etc. to back up my opinion, but because I'm willing to do a motherfuckin BAN BET, BITCHES. BULEEV DAT."

If you're going to challenge someone, call the guy a dipshit (if you must) and attack his reasoning instead of falling back on meaningless bets that nobody gives a baker's fuck about.

I don't dislike Gaby as much as the Todd but I do question his ability to hit righties. No doubt in my mind he'll smash lefties though.

Thank you for putting me in my place wanks. I was really headed down the wrong road of life.

wanks also dislikes it when you make up silly acronyms to emphasize how silly and over saturating some of the acronyms are, like FIP. I mean, that acronym has to be like 6 months old because in this crowd, somewhere sometime would have found the irony too thick to not reference fip's FIP.

Plus, I'm pretty sure there's one called wobop, along with other things that sound onomatopoetic rather than statistical.

There's a wOBA. wOBP would be cool, though.

? When did I do that?

I mean, I get Daft's sarcasm and such, but this I don't understand at all.

I think the whole "making up acronyms" thing reeks of 60 year old sportswriter who doesn't understand a thing that has happened in baseball since 1983. To me it is like flaunting ignorance on a topic. Don't attack what the stat is saying, just make fun of it because it sounds funny.

Only on topic because of the last post: I think people who rely too heavily on those statistics know nothing about baseball.

I don't see how 15 home runs is unlikely for a guy who has hit 20 per 500 ABs in the minors. If he hits 15 home runs, he can be valuable for us, if he does everything else he should. Hell, he can be somewhat valuable if he hits 10.

Also, I know he's a total fucking outlier in the world, but Dan Uggla had worse power numbers in the minors and was older for his levels, and he's doing ok. The fact of the matter is we just don't know. But I'm willing to bet that the big ass first baseman who is entering his prime power years and has hit 20 hr per 500 ABs in his career is probably going to provide at least average power numbers. They might be less than average for a 1B, but he should do enough well to be a decent player.
