And I disagree. His high so far is 17 in the minors. He managed 14 in Greensboro, which is the hitter friendliest park he has played in.

I think the power is there... unfortunately, we'll probably never find out

We'll find out eventually, for another team, of course

            42 2B + 17 HR in 557 = enough power.

He also hit 18 in 393 PAs between two levels this year.

My only problem with this is Gaby Sanchez lacks 15 HR power in the bigs at 1B and you are cool with that yet its a major hit on Petersen(I agree with your point, just saying).
Gaby wouldn't be above any of those guys on the prospect list either.

Then I think Smolinski (at 2B), Hand, and Kaminska are probably ahead of him for youth/upside purposes, Tucker and Ceda are simply a question of health and if they are projected to be 100% slot above, and then I'd clump Gaby/Petersen/Cousins in some order ahead of the Sanabia, Parcell, Cishek, Winters, etc, pitchers.
                --------------------
I like Petersen, but it's just the lack of 15 HR power in the bigs that cannot turn me on for an outfielder. The only way I could think about pushing him up, is if we value him as a CF and not a corner player.

And as a sidenote, which means he's worth less to us because of Maybin, but if we're talking a .780 OPS and neutral defense in CF, that's basically Cody Ross (assuming Petersen has a higher OBP to set off Cody's higher slugging), and that's very solid. Still, I don't know if I'd prefer the safer player that has solid upside, versus a more volatile player that projects to be above average. I think a .775 OPSing Smolinski at 2B, and turning Hand and Kaminska into young fireballers, is pretty sexy.
I completely forgot about Smolinski. I think if he's power is back then he's basically on par with Hand and Kamy (all something like B-), so then it's just where you slot them if when it comes down to distance from majors (Which is the other thing for me about Pete, he could break camp with the MLB club)/bust chances/potential/ect.

I can't put Skipworth above Petersen. I mean, he did absolutely nothing. He didn't show an ability to hit for average, he didn't show an ability to walk, he didn't show an ability to hit for power, he didn't show an ability to not strike out, he didn't show an ability to play defense. I'm not saying give up on him, but he's such a work in progress right now that I personally can't say he's still one of our top prospects just because he was a first round pick. Basically same reason I can't get excited about James, the only thing he's done is get drafted in the first round. Certainly shit might be different if I'm helping to run a team, but that's not the case so I care more about things that excite me. I guess I'm like scouts who get overly excited about raw tools, but instead excited about other things.

However, even talking about building a team, I mean you build a team with a few super stars then fill them with good roll players. This is why Oakland was so good before: They had the super stars, and Beane was great at getting role players. Now they don't have super stars, and only having role players takes you only so far. We have a stud at SS and hopefuly SP, we should have studs in the OF and at 1b and possibly 3b. I think for us right now it's more of putting in role players around those guys, so a player like Pete Pete is very important.

                All about balance.

Also my point is if Petersen's power shows up (in regards to him not having 15 HR power) again, not based off what he did during the season. If he becomes the 20 HR guy he was pegged before, we're now talking of a OPS over .800. If his AFL ends up being another poor showing in power, yeah, toss him off the deep end.

If his power starts showing up, yes he becomes # 4 quickly. I can agree with that. But I don't think it does, and I see a Petersen/Cousins R/L platoon in a corner OF spot for a few years. I like that a lot actually.

And as a complete side note, I give a guy drafted # 6 overall a freebie year. Eric Hosmer was pretty bad also. Granted not Skipworth bad, but these guys clearly need 2-3 years before we see the benefits. I don't think their prospect status drops below the likes of maybe platoon players just because they stunk as 18/19 year olds first year in pro ball.
