Fascinating quote by Svihlik:
Jordan McPherson
@J_McPherson1126
#Marlins director of amateur scouting DJ Svihlik on Max Meyer: "That's the most athletic college pitcher in this draft with the most electric stuff. And he's just about Major League ready. That's it."

On Video call Marlins Director of Amateur Scouting DJ Svihlik says he saw Max Meyer pitch in person against North Carolina and asked himself, is this one of the best arms I’ve ever seen.

Hopefully we get lucky and he becomes really good, but you can't pass on premium prospects, and that's what they just did.

Also, I'm not sure those guys have earned the benefit of the doubt yet. Last year's draft looked good on the surface, but we'll see.

Jim Callis analysis:
3. Marlins: Max Meyer, RHP, Minnesota
This will not go down as one of my best mock drafts, because I thought this pick would come down to Vanderbilt outfielder Austin Martin vs. Texas A&M lefty Asa Lacy. That said, nothing wrong with grabbing the most electric arm available. Meyer’s slider is the best pitch in this Draft, and his fastball can reach 100 mph as well. I have no questions about him making it as a starter, even if he’s slightly shorter than desired (6-foot). His stuff would play in the Majors this year if Miami wanted.

But even if he were right after them, there was a dropoff after the top 3 in this draft from everything the experts say. I'm not a scout, but I've read a lot on these guys, and you had two premium players staring you in the face, and you went somewhere else, probably because you wanted to save money (even if it's to spend later).

I hear you. I'm just saying I'll wait to judge the pick because I have no idea if Lacy is better than Meyer. If there is a difference, talent-wise, it probably isn't much. If they saw both and liked Meyer slightly more, I can't say they are wrong. Also, I don't think this was a pick to save cash because Meyer would have no reason to take any type of discount. If he didn't go 3, he likely would have gone somewhere in the 4-6 range.

i dont know shit about the players but just looking at college highlights he is definitely not a big dude and that concerns me a lot. the guys compared to him are all smaller guys who ended up having arm injuries. Asa lacy in the limited highlights ive seen looks like his stuff is stupid electric and he has a bigger body that would concern me less in terms of holding up long term.

I much prefer a Clydesdale to a Shetland pony, especially when the big horse is left-handed and has a starter's mix of pitches. Lacy also pitched in a more competitive conference. If I was going RHP, it would have been Abel, the high schooler from Oregon. But I was Lacy all the way. I'd love to be wrong about Meyer, but I'm not feelin' it.
