He's at 124 IP this year, which is a lot. My guess is they are trying to extend his season a bit and not just shut him down.

I'd be more worried about the innings total if he wasn't killing everyone, i.e. more low stress innings versus working for it. We all generalize about "innings thrown" because of Verducci, but it's really more about pitch counts and struggling, which most young pitchers do, which are just generalized over that time and why people freak over massive innings jumps. Fernandez is so good, they may not need to "shut him down" for a pure innings reason because he isn't stressed or tiring. He is literally killing everyone. But, removing him in the 5th every inning is a nice way to balance that out.

I think he has 3-5 more starts and the call it a tremendous season at 140-150 innings. What a beast.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The New Orleans Zephyrs' bats awoke from their slumber on Monday night scoring 20 runs and pounding out 23 hits in a 20-10 win over the division-leading Albuquerque Isotopes on Monday.

New Orleans scored one run on Saturday and were shutout on Sunday. The Zephyrs have pulled within three games of the division lead.

The Zephyrs had a season-high 20 runs and 23 hits and set a new franchise record of 20 RBIs in the game.

Brett Hayes led the offensive attack with five hits and four RBIs.

The Zephyrs had five home runs with Luke Montz hitting two for his team-leading 29th on the seaaon. Hayes, Chase Lambin, and Kevin Mattison also homered.

The Zephyrs and Isotopes were back and forth early in the game, but the Zephyrs scored nine runs in the seventh inning to pull away.
