  • Round CB-A: Joe Mack, C

Joe Mack HS Catcher at 31. Don’t know how they’re affording these guys, but two very exciting picks.

Another pick you have to like. Mack was rated pretty closely to Ford by a lot of people with Ford getting the benefit of being athletic to play other positions. It looks like Mack will definitely be a catcher, though. Interestingly enough it doesn’t seem like that pick is under slot either. I’m always a fan of going for big upside, and the Marlins did that with both picks at premium positions.

Hopefully, signability is not a problem..... they just can't get cheap here

Joe Mack? I'm not sold. Per CBS: "Mack is a high-school catcher from a cold-weather state who has a history of swinging and missing". We've certainly been down that road before. I think the catcher position has to be addressed by trade(s). If we insisted on going with a catcher, Nelson from FSU was a more obvious fit. After hitting 20 homers in the first half of the college season (to lead the nation by a wide margin), opposing pitchers stopped pitching to him. He still wound up leading the country with 23. Being an older prospect, he may have needed just a short time in the minors.
We'll see how it goes, I'm with you, I advocated for Nelson above, but Nelson has swing in miss in his bat as well, and Mack was rated much higher than Nelson in pretty much every publication. For these high school guys, especially from cold weather schools I know I have pretty much zero insight, their numbers in high school mean basically nothing, so we just gotta hope the scouts were right on on this guy.

It's really not about being cheap any more with the draft, because the MLB limits how much teams can spend. It's about being smart, and taking guys later in the draft that'll sign for less, to allow us to spend overslot with the first two picks, which we'll most likely have to do. Hopefully we can find another Peyton Burdick in rounds 2 or 3. A guy who took less because of his age, but also produced once he got in the system.

Can they get an extension on the signing date or has everyone got to be signed by Aug 1st ? Is it just 1st round picks have to be signed by then ? So far I've only heard of one guy signed with the Marlins, hopefully, they've signed a few more.

Based on a Mish article from today:

4th-9th rounders signed, at or below slot

Mack and Morissette expected to sign this week

It's everyone as far as I know, which I was surprised about, since the draft was about a month later than it usually is this year.

Good, I'm actually more interested in Mack than Watson.
