Right-hander Steven Cishek got a surprise call at season’s end to join the Marlins’ bullpen. He only appeared in three games (4 1/3 innings), but he did not allow a run and gave up a hit, a walk and three strikeouts.
Among the Marlins representatives in the Arizona Fall League, Cishek held his own among some of baseball’s top prospects. In 11 games (13 1/3 innings) he had a 4.05 ERA, 15 hits, four walks and 18 strikeouts. The 4.05 ERA might not seem that great, but much of what Cishek gave up came in one outing. On Nov. 4 at Peoria, he allowed four runs on six hits over 1 2/3 innings.
The 6-6, 20o-pound Cishek will compete for a bullpen job this spring.
The other Marlins in the AFL and their results: RHP Peter Andrelczyk (0-0, 2.81, 9 games, 16 innings, 11 hits, 7 BB, 16 K, .200 BAA); RHP Bryan Evans (1-2, 5.40, 3 games started, 10 innings, 13 hits, 2 BB, 10 K, .310 BAA); C Kyle Skipworth (.267-3-12; 16-for-60; 3 HR; 5 BB; 15 K; .817 OPS); 2B Ryan Curry (.206-2-6; 13-for-63; 2 HR; 3 BB; 5 K; .603 OPS).
SS Ozzie Martinez, RHP Kris Harvey and LHP Sean West all departed early due to injuries. Martinez appeared in just seven games (25 at-bats) before he was sent home with a groin strain. Harvey came up with a shoulder strain after three appearances. West made one AFL start and strained his elbow, ending an injury-plagued season in which he totaled 69 innings. He currently is rehabbing in Jupiter.
“We are and he is ready to right off the year and look forward to 2011,” President of Baseball Operations Larry Beinfest said, of West. “We expect him to be healthy and be the Sean West we saw in 2009.”
