Off the DL - Jose Ceda is back and optioned to Greensboro. As he builds back up his arm, suspect quick promotions to A+ and AA to get him back to where he was pre-injury. Bigger update next month when he actually pitches.
SP - Chad James (19 years old, 2009 first round pick)
April 2010 - 14.2 IP, 4.30 era, 1.36 whip (13 H, 7 BB), 14 K, .232 BAA, 2.63 FB/GB
May 2010 - 11.1 IP, 3.97 era, 1.67 whip (11 H, 8 BB), 12 K, .250 BAA, 3.00 GB.FB

James was injured most of May, but came back alright. He is a little wild, but he is striking out a guy an inning and generating massive ground balls. Very encouraging going forward. Need more of a sample size and legitimate scouting reports to see where he is.

2009 - Spent most of the year in extended spring training, 9 uneventful innings in GCL/JAM

So that’s why he was rumored to be a Rule5 selection last year. Those 19.1 innings are in 9 appearances, so they are using him for 2+ innings. He will likely be aggressively promoted to Jupiter, maybe even Jacksonville, due to his age and that the Marlins will have to protect him on the 40 man to keep him next year.
Quick Notes: Alejandro Ramos, GBO’s closer, terrible April but rebounded with 11. IP, 2.38 era, 1.06 whip, 5/15 BB/K May. He is 24 and played college ball at Texas Tech... Matt Montgomery still making A ball hitters look like chumps, season line is 62.2 IP, 3.11 era, 1.21 whip (64 H, 12 BB), 49 K, 1.91 GB/FB. Still, as an experienced college pitcher he should be doing this so we won’t find out if he is a legitimate prospect until Jupiter or more likely Jacksonville in 2 years.

Kind of alarming the amount of hits he is giving up, but he is generating a lot of K’s and is walking a pretty solid amount of guys. If that .BAA goes down a little bit, going to start looking real good. Unfortunately, Jupiter is also a hitter’s environment so can’t get the benefit of a doubt from park factors. But not good, or bad.

Kaminska was named a minor league player of the wee a few weeks back, and as you can see absolutely dominated May. 2/23 BB/K. Totally awesome. His Home/Road innings were split in May so can’t say Jupiter sucked up all those outs either. Great month. Unfortunately, 1-4 on the year because Jupiter’s bats are horrendous.
Quick Notes: Kris Harvey (on the 40 man) missed the first two months of the year, returned June 1 and threw 1.2 scoreless, striking out 3. Presumably, he still has a bad ass mustache... Peter Andrelcyzk walked a lot of guys, but still came out with a 17.2 IP, 3.57 era, 1.41 whip month. He was up in JAX for a single appearance and is back here now.

As awesome as it can get. He has been named the Marlins minor league pitcher of the month in both April and May. I have tried, but I have been unable to find a 2010 scouting report on him about his velocity, mechanics, and overall performance. There have been conflicting reports over the last two years of him throwing mid/high 80s versus low 90s, which is a big difference when you start to project a pitcher at the MLB level. This will shed light as to if he is just throwing junk and getting guys out (See Yusmeiro Petit 2005 http://www.baseball-reference.com/mi...d=petit-001yus), or if he is simply overwhelming hitters. I am very hopeful for the later as he has always been described as “raw,” and this is him simply coming into his own.

Phenomenal GB and K rate. LOOGY of the future had a 1.13 era in his splits versus left handed batter. Yes, outrageously small sample size, but this is what it’s going to be moving forward. Walks are settling down a little which is a good sign.

SP - Andrew Miller, has walked 19 batters in 17.1 innings in Jax through June 2. Also has given up 19 hits, striking out 12. Hopefully his mechanics smooth out
RP - Matt Petersen, Season total 24 IP, 1.13 era, .96 whip (16 H, 7 BB), 14 K, .78 GB/FB, .190 BAA, is Jax’s closer and has 11 saves on the year. He is 28, so very old for this level, but can’t take away the stats. Would like to see more whiffs, because pitching to contact with a .78 GB/FB is not a good idea, but it is what it is. A likely promotion to NOLA is coming this summer.
Quick Notes: Everyone in Jacksonville is doing great... Steve Cishek promoted to Jax and has held his own in his brief AA appearances to date, combined year line, 21 IP, 5.40 era, 1.46 whip (15 H, 10 BB), 20 K, 1.56 GB/FB, .250 BAA. Will receive a bigger update next month as a better AA split emerges....Wade Korpi has given up 1 run in 15.2 AA innings. He is a 20th round pick of 2008 draft, and is probably most famous for getting drilled in the head on a line drive in college.... Future swingman/innings eater Tom Koehler in May, 29.2 IP, 2.73 era, 1.08 whip (23 H, 9 BB), 20 K, .217 BAA... Elih Villanueva still junkballing serious junk to AA hitters leading the staff with 71.2 IP and walking only 11. He has given up 8 HR, has a .72 GB/FB, and only 49 K. I don’t expect him to produce at the MLB level, but he’s a good organizational arm to have... Todd Doolitte, who has been in the Marlins organization for 6 years, has a 2.89 era through 23.2 innings. Respectable 1.14 whip and 24 K, but he is 28 and literally been pitching at this level for 3 years now.... Jeff Allison has a 2.87 era through 31.1 innings, flipping between starting and relieving. Only 11 K, and a .97 GB/FB. That’s not going to cut it for a flyball pitcher moving forward, but good for Jeff maintaining the course. Oh what could have been.
DL - Graham Taylor, Kyle Winters. Both out for the year with TJ surgeries
New Orleans Zephyrs (Triple A Affiliate)
RP - Ryan Tucker (Season) 33.2 IP, 6.15 era, 1.72 whip (41 H, 17 BB), 19 K, 1.13 GB/FB, .295 BAA. Has not been the same since returning from his arm injury, and if you did not see, is suspended indefinitely from the Marlins from a verbal argument with an umpire and then with the rest of the team.
SP - Rick Vanden Hurk, May 2010 - 29.1 IP, 1.53 era, 1.05 whip (20 H, 11 BB), 29 K, .75 GB/FB, .190 BAA. Pretty dominating month. Got absolutely shlacked for 8 ER on June 2 (3 more than all of May) though.
SP - Sean West, returned June 1 and threw 1.2 innings, striking out 4, walking 2, and giving up 3 hits. Larger update next time as he gets back into the swing of things.
RP - Hunter Jones, up briefly with the Marlins in May, overall throwing a 4.05 era in AAA in 40 IP, giving up 43 H, 19 BB, and striking out 26. He is mostly starting for NOLA due to need, but will clearly be a 2nd lefty in the bullpen (if anything) at the next level.
RP - Brett Sinkbeil, May 2010 - 16.1 IP, 2.20 era, .91 whip (11 H, 4 BB), 13 K, 1.06 GB/FB, .180 BAA. Maybe Sinkbeil’s best month in the minors. The month was almost perfect before giving up 4 ER (all the runs for the month) in a May 29th outing. Hopefully he can build off of this so he is not a complete 1st round bust.
Quick Notes: Burke Badenhop, recently demoted to AAA, has thrown 4.2 innings giving up 1 run. Badenhop is Badenhop... Jay Buente is up with the Marlins and getting his shot at getting someone out. In NOLA, he had a 2.70 era and 35 K in 26.2 innings. Is probably a 4th or 5th RHP in the bullpen if anything... Brad Stone, starting has a 3.10 era between JAX and NOLA in 49.1 innings. He is a AAA starter... Taylor Tankersley is also up with the Marlins, and he had a 4.19 era through 19.1 innings before call up.
And in case wondering, the arms we have recently traded and released
A. Thompson (Nick Johnson) - Split between AAA/AA, has a 5.77 era through 57.2 innings. Given up 74 hits, with a 13/30 BB/K. Basically, nothing really lost here.
Voss (Nate Robertson) - 24.1 IP, 5.18 era, 16 K, but in a small split is dominating lefties. We traded away a potential moderate loogy. Beinfest knew what he was getting rid of.
Correa (Paulino) - Got shelled in April playing in A ball for the Giants, but has 21 K in 16 IP. He always had a big arm, but he has been hurt. It seems like he is finally getting healthy. Good for him, but no real loss.
C. Martinez (Just Because) - In the Braves AAA affiliate, 5.04 era in 25 innings

RP - Matt Petersen, Season total 24 IP, 1.13 era, .96 whip (16 H, 7 BB), 14 K, .78 GB/FB, .190 BAA, is Jax’s closer and has 11 saves on the year. He is 28, so very old for this level, but can’t take away the stats. Would like to see more whiffs, because pitching to contact with a .78 GB/FB is not a good idea, but it is what it is. A likely promotion to NOLA is coming this summer.
Quick Notes: Everyone in Jacksonville is doing great... Steve Cishek promoted to Jax and has held his own in his brief AA appearances to date, combined year line, 21 IP, 5.40 era, 1.46 whip (15 H, 10 BB), 20 K, 1.56 GB/FB, .250 BAA. Will receive a bigger update next month as a better AA split emerges....Wade Korpi has given up 1 run in 15.2 AA innings. He is a 20th round pick of 2008 draft, and is probably most famous for getting drilled in the head on a line drive in college.... Future swingman/innings eater Tom Koehler in May, 29.2 IP, 2.73 era, 1.08 whip (23 H, 9 BB), 20 K, .217 BAA... Elih Villanueva still junkballing serious junk to AA hitters leading the staff with 71.2 IP and walking only 11. He has given up 8 HR, has a .72 GB/FB, and only 49 K. I don’t expect him to produce at the MLB level, but he’s a good organizational arm to have... Todd Doolitte, who has been in the Marlins organization for 6 years, has a 2.89 era through 23.2 innings. Respectable 1.14 whip and 24 K, but he is 28 and literally been pitching at this level for 3 years now.... Jeff Allison has a 2.87 era through 31.1 innings, flipping between starting and relieving. Only 11 K, and a .97 GB/FB. That’s not going to cut it for a flyball pitcher moving forward, but good for Jeff maintaining the course. Oh what could have been.
DL - Graham Taylor, Kyle Winters. Both out for the year with TJ surgeries
New Orleans Zephyrs (Triple A Affiliate)
RP - Ryan Tucker (Season) 33.2 IP, 6.15 era, 1.72 whip (41 H, 17 BB), 19 K, 1.13 GB/FB, .295 BAA. Has not been the same since returning from his arm injury, and if you did not see, is suspended indefinitely from the Marlins from a verbal argument with an umpire and then with the rest of the team.
SP - Rick Vanden Hurk, May 2010 - 29.1 IP, 1.53 era, 1.05 whip (20 H, 11 BB), 29 K, .75 GB/FB, .190 BAA. Pretty dominating month. Got absolutely shlacked for 8 ER on June 2 (3 more than all of May) though.
SP - Sean West, returned June 1 and threw 1.2 innings, striking out 4, walking 2, and giving up 3 hits. Larger update next time as he gets back into the swing of things.
RP - Hunter Jones, up briefly with the Marlins in May, overall throwing a 4.05 era in AAA in 40 IP, giving up 43 H, 19 BB, and striking out 26. He is mostly starting for NOLA due to need, but will clearly be a 2nd lefty in the bullpen (if anything) at the next level.
RP - Brett Sinkbeil, May 2010 - 16.1 IP, 2.20 era, .91 whip (11 H, 4 BB), 13 K, 1.06 GB/FB, .180 BAA. Maybe Sinkbeil’s best month in the minors. The month was almost perfect before giving up 4 ER (all the runs for the month) in a May 29th outing. Hopefully he can build off of this so he is not a complete 1st round bust.
Quick Notes: Burke Badenhop, recently demoted to AAA, has thrown 4.2 innings giving up 1 run. Badenhop is Badenhop... Jay Buente is up with the Marlins and getting his shot at getting someone out. In NOLA, he had a 2.70 era and 35 K in 26.2 innings. Is probably a 4th or 5th RHP in the bullpen if anything... Brad Stone, starting has a 3.10 era between JAX and NOLA in 49.1 innings. He is a AAA starter... Taylor Tankersley is also up with the Marlins, and he had a 4.19 era through 19.1 innings before call up.
And in case wondering, the arms we have recently traded and released
A. Thompson (Nick Johnson) - Split between AAA/AA, has a 5.77 era through 57.2 innings. Given up 74 hits, with a 13/30 BB/K. Basically, nothing really lost here.
Voss (Nate Robertson) - 24.1 IP, 5.18 era, 16 K, but in a small split is dominating lefties. We traded away a potential moderate loogy. Beinfest knew what he was getting rid of.
Correa (Paulino) - Got shelled in April playing in A ball for the Giants, but has 21 K in 16 IP. He always had a big arm, but he has been hurt. It seems like he is finally getting healthy. Good for him, but no real loss.
C. Martinez (Just Because) - In the Braves AAA affiliate, 5.04 era in 25 innings
