  • May 2010 Pitcher's Roundup

April 2010 Round Up, which includes short reports on each pitcher with what they throw, etc. - http://soflamarlins.com/showthread.php?t=2091
    ---

Lou’s top 10 pitching prospects as of this writing
(West, Miller, Vanden Hurk, do not count)
(Position is based on where I see them in the bigs)

    1. Chad James, LHP, SP
    2. Jhan Marinez, RHP, RP
    3. Alejandro Sanabia, RHP, SP
    4. Brad Hand, LHP, SP/RP
    5. Jose Ceda, RHP, RP (based on reputation and assuming health, could drop fast)
    6. Dan Jennings, LHP, RP
    7. Ryan Tucker, RHP, RP (and falling fast)
    8. Kyle Kaminska, RHP, SP/RP
    9. Edgar Olmos, LHP, SP/RP
    10. Steve Cishek, RHP, RP (toss up with Parcell)

*Yet to debut, 2009 second round pick after James, extended spring training and likely to surface GCL/Jamestown shortly.

    ---

    Greensboro Grasshoppers (A Affiliate)
    (Through June 3rd)

Off the DL - Jose Ceda is back and optioned to Greensboro. As he builds back up his arm, suspect quick promotions to A+ and AA to get him back to where he was pre-injury. Bigger update next month when he actually pitches.

SP - Chad James (19 years old, 2009 first round pick)
    April 2010 - 14.2 IP, 4.30 era, 1.36 whip (13 H, 7 BB), 14 K, .232 BAA, 2.63 FB/GB

    May 2010 - 11.1 IP, 3.97 era, 1.67 whip (11 H, 8 BB), 12 K, .250 BAA, 3.00 GB.FB
    Total 2010 - 26 IP, 4.15 era, 1.50 whip (24 H, 15 BB), 26 K, .240 BAA, 2.77 GB/FB

James was injured most of May, but came back alright. He is a little wild, but he is striking out a guy an inning and generating massive ground balls. Very encouraging going forward. Need more of a sample size and legitimate scouting reports to see where he is.

SP/RP - Edgar Olmos (20 years old, 2008 third round pick)
2009 - Spent most of the year in extended spring training, 9 uneventful innings in GCL/JAM
    April 2010 - 16.2 IP, 4.32 era, 1.86 whip (26 H, 10 BB), 27 K, .300 BAA, 1.36 GB/FB

    May 2010 - 29 IP, 4.34 era, 1.34 whip (24 H, 15 BB), 20 K, 5 HR allowed, .226 BAA, 1.30 GB/FB
    Total 2010 - 45.2 IP, 4.34 era, 1.53 whip (45 H, 25 BB), 47 K, .256 BAA, 1.24 GB/FB

Other big young lefty in A ball striking out a lot of guys, producing a decent amount of ground balls, and struggling with control. As with James, those walks go down and the Marlins have a monster.

    RP - Arquimedes Caminero
    April 2010 - 9 IP, 6.00 era, 2.44 whip (12 H, 10 BB), 13 K, .316 BAA, 1.00 GB/FB

    May 2010 - 19.1 IP, 1.40 era, 1.08 whip (11 H, 10 BB), 22 K, .155 BAA, 1.57 GB/FB

So that’s why he was rumored to be a Rule5 selection last year. Those 19.1 innings are in 9 appearances, so they are using him for 2+ innings. He will likely be aggressively promoted to Jupiter, maybe even Jacksonville, due to his age and that the Marlins will have to protect him on the 40 man to keep him next year.

Quick Notes: Alejandro Ramos, GBO’s closer, terrible April but rebounded with 11. IP, 2.38 era, 1.06 whip, 5/15 BB/K May. He is 24 and played college ball at Texas Tech... Matt Montgomery still making A ball hitters look like chumps, season line is 62.2 IP, 3.11 era, 1.21 whip (64 H, 12 BB), 49 K, 1.91 GB/FB. Still, as an experienced college pitcher he should be doing this so we won’t find out if he is a legitimate prospect until Jupiter or more likely Jacksonville in 2 years.

No Shows: Bryan Berglund (2009 2nd round pick) out for year labrum, Steven Richard (2009 8th round pick), presumably in extended spring training slamming beers

    Jupiter (A+ Advanced Ball)

SP - Brad Hand (20 years old, 2008 second round pick)
    2009 (A) - 127.2 IP, 4.86 era, 1.53 whip (127 H, 66 BB), 122 K, .264 BAA, 1.22 GB/FB, 12 HR
    April 2010 - 21 IP, 3.43 era, 1.52 whip (26 H, 6 BB), 25 K, .306 AVG, 1.85 GB/FB, 3 HR

    May 2010 - 34.1 IP, 4.72 era, 1.66 whip (43 H, 14 BB), 34 K, .307 .BAA, 1.28 GB/FB
    Total 2010 - 61.1 IP, 3.82 era, 1.50 whip (71 H, 21 BB), 66 K, .290 BAA, 1.43 GB/FB

Kind of alarming the amount of hits he is giving up, but he is generating a lot of K’s and is walking a pretty solid amount of guys. If that .BAA goes down a little bit, going to start looking real good. Unfortunately, Jupiter is also a hitter’s environment so can’t get the benefit of a doubt from park factors. But not good, or bad.

RP - Jhan Marinez (22 years old, 2006 International Signing DR)
    2009 (A+) - 43 IP, 3.14 era, 1.09 whip (28 H, 20 BB), 42 K, .185 BAA, .68 GB/FB, 4 HR
    April 2010 - 9.2 IP, 1.86 era, 1.45 whip (6 H, 8 BB), 17 K, .188 BAA, .71 GB/FB

    May 2010 - 11.2 IP, .77 era, .68 whip (4 H, 4 BB), 19 K, .114 BAA, .63 GB/FB
    Total - 22.1 IP, 1.21 era, 1.03 whip (10 H, 13 BB), 38 K, .143 BAA, .63 GB/FB

    Devastating. A promotion is imminent.

SP - Kyle Kaminska (22 years old, 2007 25th round)
    2009 (A) - 142.2 IP, 4.16 era, 1.38 whip (162 H, 36 BB), 112 K, .284 BAA, 1.01 GB/FB, 10 HR
    April 2010 - 21 IP, 5.57 era, 1.66 whip (29 H, 6 BB), 10 K, .333 BAA, .88 GB/FB, 1 HR

    May 2010 - 27.2 IP, 1.95 era, .68 whip (17 H, 2 BB), 23 K, .165 BAA, .71 GB/FB
    Total 2010 - 48.2 IP, 3.51 era, 1.10 whip (46 H, 8 BB), 33 K, .242 BAA, .79 GB/FB

Kaminska was named a minor league player of the wee a few weeks back, and as you can see absolutely dominated May. 2/23 BB/K. Totally awesome. His Home/Road innings were split in May so can’t say Jupiter sucked up all those outs either. Great month. Unfortunately, 1-4 on the year because Jupiter’s bats are horrendous.

Quick Notes: Kris Harvey (on the 40 man) missed the first two months of the year, returned June 1 and threw 1.2 scoreless, striking out 3. Presumably, he still has a bad ass mustache... Peter Andrelcyzk walked a lot of guys, but still came out with a 17.2 IP, 3.57 era, 1.41 whip month. He was up in JAX for a single appearance and is back here now.

    Jacksonville Suns (Double A Affiliate)

SP - Alejandro Sanabia (22 years old, 2006 draft 32nd Round)
    2009 (A+) - 104.1 IP, 3.45 era, 1.20 whip (89 H, 36 BB), .231 BAA, .87 GB/FB, 6 HR
    April 2010 - 31.1 IP, 1.15 era, .89 whip (20 H, 8 BB), 30 K, .179 BAA, .97 GB/FB, 1 HR (includes May 1 start)

    May 2010 - 39.1 IP, 2.52 era, .79 whip (26 H, 5 BB), 29 K, .187 BAA, 1.32 GB/FB
    Season Total (through June 3) - 67.6 IP, 1.73 era, .87 whip (46 H, 13 BB), 56 K, .190 BAA, 1.15 GB/FB

As awesome as it can get. He has been named the Marlins minor league pitcher of the month in both April and May. I have tried, but I have been unable to find a 2010 scouting report on him about his velocity, mechanics, and overall performance. There have been conflicting reports over the last two years of him throwing mid/high 80s versus low 90s, which is a big difference when you start to project a pitcher at the MLB level. This will shed light as to if he is just throwing junk and getting guys out (See Yusmeiro Petit 2005 http://www.baseball-reference.com/mi...d=petit-001yus), or if he is simply overwhelming hitters. I am very hopeful for the later as he has always been described as “raw,” and this is him simply coming into his own.

RP - Dan Jennings (23 years old, 2008 ninth round pick)
    2009 (Combined A, A+, AA) - 62.2 IP, 1.19 whip (49 H, 26 BB), 69 K, 2.26 GB/FB, .221 BAA, 1 HR
    April 2010 - 9.1 IP, 3.86 era, 2.57 whip (11 H, 13 BB), 12 K, 3.00 GB/FB, .306 BAA

    May 2010 - 14.2 IP, 2.45 era, 1.33 whip (12 H, 7 BB), 16 K, 3.17 GB/FB, .231 BAA
    Total 2010 - 26 IP, 2.77 era, 1.69 whip (24 H, 20 BB), 30 K, 2.75 GB/FB, .253 BAA (through June 1)

Phenomenal GB and K rate. LOOGY of the future had a 1.13 era in his splits versus left handed batter. Yes, outrageously small sample size, but this is what it’s going to be moving forward. Walks are settling down a little which is a good sign.

RP - Garret Parcell (26 years old, 2007 draft 12th round).
    2009 (A+, AA combined) - 40.2 IP, .25 era (2 earned runs), .76 whip (16 H, 15 BB), 42 K, 2.05 GB/FB, .128 BAA
    April 2010 - 11 IP, 3.27 era, 1.63 whip (13 H, 5 BB), 5 K, .325 BAA, 1.67 GB/FB

    May 2010 - 18.1 IP, 1.96 era, .92 whip (12 H, 5 BB), 14 K, .190 BAA, .95 GB/FB
    Season Total - 31.1 IP, 2.30 era, 1.11 whip (25 H, 10 BB), 21 K, .229 BAA, 1.16 GB/FB

Changeup still fooling the crap out of AA hitters.

SP - Andrew Miller, has walked 19 batters in 17.1 innings in Jax through June 2. Also has given up 19 hits, striking out 12. Hopefully his mechanics smooth out

RP - Matt Petersen, Season total 24 IP, 1.13 era, .96 whip (16 H, 7 BB), 14 K, .78 GB/FB, .190 BAA, is Jax’s closer and has 11 saves on the year. He is 28, so very old for this level, but can’t take away the stats. Would like to see more whiffs, because pitching to contact with a .78 GB/FB is not a good idea, but it is what it is. A likely promotion to NOLA is coming this summer.

Quick Notes: Everyone in Jacksonville is doing great... Steve Cishek promoted to Jax and has held his own in his brief AA appearances to date, combined year line, 21 IP, 5.40 era, 1.46 whip (15 H, 10 BB), 20 K, 1.56 GB/FB, .250 BAA. Will receive a bigger update next month as a better AA split emerges....Wade Korpi has given up 1 run in 15.2 AA innings. He is a 20th round pick of 2008 draft, and is probably most famous for getting drilled in the head on a line drive in college.... Future swingman/innings eater Tom Koehler in May, 29.2 IP, 2.73 era, 1.08 whip (23 H, 9 BB), 20 K, .217 BAA... Elih Villanueva still junkballing serious junk to AA hitters leading the staff with 71.2 IP and walking only 11. He has given up 8 HR, has a .72 GB/FB, and only 49 K. I don’t expect him to produce at the MLB level, but he’s a good organizational arm to have... Todd Doolitte, who has been in the Marlins organization for 6 years, has a 2.89 era through 23.2 innings. Respectable 1.14 whip and 24 K, but he is 28 and literally been pitching at this level for 3 years now.... Jeff Allison has a 2.87 era through 31.1 innings, flipping between starting and relieving. Only 11 K, and a .97 GB/FB. That’s not going to cut it for a flyball pitcher moving forward, but good for Jeff maintaining the course. Oh what could have been.

DL - Graham Taylor, Kyle Winters. Both out for the year with TJ surgeries

New Orleans Zephyrs (Triple A Affiliate)

RP - Ryan Tucker (Season) 33.2 IP, 6.15 era, 1.72 whip (41 H, 17 BB), 19 K, 1.13 GB/FB, .295 BAA. Has not been the same since returning from his arm injury, and if you did not see, is suspended indefinitely from the Marlins from a verbal argument with an umpire and then with the rest of the team.

SP - Rick Vanden Hurk, May 2010 - 29.1 IP, 1.53 era, 1.05 whip (20 H, 11 BB), 29 K, .75 GB/FB, .190 BAA. Pretty dominating month. Got absolutely shlacked for 8 ER on June 2 (3 more than all of May) though.

SP - Sean West, returned June 1 and threw 1.2 innings, striking out 4, walking 2, and giving up 3 hits. Larger update next time as he gets back into the swing of things.

RP - Hunter Jones, up briefly with the Marlins in May, overall throwing a 4.05 era in AAA in 40 IP, giving up 43 H, 19 BB, and striking out 26. He is mostly starting for NOLA due to need, but will clearly be a 2nd lefty in the bullpen (if anything) at the next level.

RP - Brett Sinkbeil, May 2010 - 16.1 IP, 2.20 era, .91 whip (11 H, 4 BB), 13 K, 1.06 GB/FB, .180 BAA. Maybe Sinkbeil’s best month in the minors. The month was almost perfect before giving up 4 ER (all the runs for the month) in a May 29th outing. Hopefully he can build off of this so he is not a complete 1st round bust.

Quick Notes: Burke Badenhop, recently demoted to AAA, has thrown 4.2 innings giving up 1 run. Badenhop is Badenhop... Jay Buente is up with the Marlins and getting his shot at getting someone out. In NOLA, he had a 2.70 era and 35 K in 26.2 innings. Is probably a 4th or 5th RHP in the bullpen if anything... Brad Stone, starting has a 3.10 era between JAX and NOLA in 49.1 innings. He is a AAA starter... Taylor Tankersley is also up with the Marlins, and he had a 4.19 era through 19.1 innings before call up.

And in case wondering, the arms we have recently traded and released

    A. Thompson (Nick Johnson) - Split between AAA/AA, has a 5.77 era through 57.2 innings. Given up 74 hits, with a 13/30 BB/K. Basically, nothing really lost here.

Voss (Nate Robertson) - 24.1 IP, 5.18 era, 16 K, but in a small split is dominating lefties. We traded away a potential moderate loogy. Beinfest knew what he was getting rid of.

Correa (Paulino) - Got shelled in April playing in A ball for the Giants, but has 21 K in 16 IP. He always had a big arm, but he has been hurt. It seems like he is finally getting healthy. Good for him, but no real loss.

    C. Martinez (Just Because) - In the Braves AAA affiliate, 5.04 era in 25 innings

Not sure when he had the surgery but he has been dealing with it since at least spring training.

          The 2009 so far...

1st Chad James - shoulder problems

2nd Bryan Berglund - Labrum Surgery

          4th Dan Mahoney - TJS

8th Stephen Richards - can't say for sure but I think he is hurt as well (Doesn't make sense for an advance college arm to be repeating Jamestown)

James is back at least, so we're not a typical Pittsburgh Pirates 1995-2005 draft yet. And yea, Richards should be around. I liked him in college. I had no idea about Berglund. I haven't seen that anywhere.

Ya well when I went to Spring Training I was talking to Rosey and he said he was hurt then and then I just saw him again two weeks ago and I was getting updates on guys and he said that Berglund had had surgery and is done for the year.

I liked Richards myself. Before the season started I thought he had a real good chance of being this yr version of Dan Jennings. Find it ??? that he has yet to throw a pitch this yr.

Lefthanded Stephen Richards is a 5-foot-11, 175-pound reliever, and his stuff is good enough to get him drafted between the sixth and 10th rounds. His slider is a legitimate out pitch, and he sets it up with an 88-91 mph fastball. Going into the College World Series, he was 5-1, 1.09 with nine saves and 48 strikeouts in 33 innings.
                BA

Two arms from the 2009 draft I look forward to seeing more of: Josh Hodges (7th) and Joey O'Gara (31st).

                    Thanks

And if anyone was wondering, I have been unable to do the roundups this season past May due to the insanity of the Florida Bar exam and extended sanity related vacation post exam.

Will do a massive year end in September charting all the progressions

was wondering if anyone had opinion on lack of movement on our pitchers from greensboro to jupiterto jax and jax to new orleans. I know that many opportunities for the big club has happened. Just curious about some stellar staring pitching staying at the level or the whole year.
