What about something like a "get out of jail free card" every 5 years?

In other words, you can null any contract on your team. That player instantly becomes a FA. But you can only do this once every 5 years. You can't do it again until 5 years after you last did it.

I wouldn't be for it but something to think about.

Too hard to keep track of, in my opinion, especially since I'd be keeping track of it.

But, in the case of a new owner, I don't think I'd have a problem with one "auto-correct" where they can get a more reasonable contract for a player... though, really, our current group of owners haven't given out anything like that A-Rod contract... my God, that was stupid

Can I stagger his yearly salaries?

Even if it doesn't apply to me, we should set up a process to allow new owners to take ridiculously bad contracts off the books.
I'm gonna lean towards no on staggering, if only by virtue that I mean, it's still saving you 11M a year anyways... besides, that'd give you 20M in cap space, more or less, the next few years, you'll be fine, you just won the WS

I'm really worried about this free agent class. Someone always does something stupid to ruin it for everyone. I think as far as free agents go, there should be no do overs. if you give Carlos Guillen 30 million dollars, you're stuck with him.

          ARod can be sorta justified.

I really don't see this being a problem now, because that's half your cap space right there, as opposed to TBBC where it'd be 30% and you could still field a very VERY competent team for at least 50M

Can we atleast adjust the league cap to inflation/deflation but not an amount greater than 3% or something like that? Instead of adjusting the cap arbitrarily let's do it based on the total growth of league-wide payroll from the end of one season to another.

Or just keep the cap as is

That would not make any sense because the free agent market is going to drive up the cost of players now that the competition is human owner v. human owner.

Instead of PWG deciding to arbitrarily raise the cap $5M every 3 years, let the market forces have a say in determining how high or low the cap goes.

Why raise the salary cap at all?

Free agent offers will be based off what the salary cap is. If owners can't make it under the cap, contracts for players will be smaller

Well, considering the CPU determines a player's asking price, and not relative market value, I don't see it being an issue... I've never seen a player see Carlos Guillen get 30M and ask for the same. So yes, while someone may sign a crazy contract, it will be an outlier to the usual.

Fuck the CPU I want more realism in how league decisions are made.

I was trying to figure out a way to do it based on gross payroll and stuff like that, then I gave up.

But I would like it going up at some point and not being arbitrary.

All that aside, the first batch of free agents should not be the time to talk about increasing payrolls, let's see what happens before we worry about it.

We'd have to wait until 2009 but:

2008 Opening Day League Gross Payroll / 2007 Opening Day League Gross Payroll = Answer - 1

For example total league payroll in 2007 is $450M and 2008 is $490M.

                              490/450= 1.088 - 1 = .088 = +8.8%

I was toying with something like that, but I felt the increases could get a little out of hand because you're looking at payroll figures for 22 teams.
