Because it seems to me that even though the Royals and Mets are good, the better teams are the Jays and Cubs, the better storylines come from the Jays and the Cubs, the more exciting teams to watch are the Jays and the Cubs, and the teams that are losing are the Jays and the Cubs.

Yes the overall best team is not guaranteed to win but the best performing team is and we want to watch the team that is playing the best at that point in time not the one that is the most talented but hasn't performed to their ability since the first half.
