  • Royals Extend GM Dayton Moore Through 2014

"Why? Is Moore likely to leave or find himself sought after by other teams? No. He's the GM of a horrible team that now is largely of his own making, and two of the three bright spots (Zack Greinke and Butler) are guys he inherited -- and reportedly he tried to trade Butler more than once prior to 2009.

"He has made several major, expensive moves that have flopped and hasn't added prospects through trades, which is SOP for the GM of a bad/rebuilding team.

"Under Moore, the Royals have drafted better, spending more money to acquire top players instead of taking the best available player who would take slot money. However, the system has taken a step backwards this year between injuries, poor performances and strange moves, like the rash promotion of Eric Hosmer to high-A. The team has also seen some retroactive criticism for picks, like taking Luke Hochevar over Tim Lincecum in 2006 and Mike Moustakas over Matt Wieters and Jason Heyward in 2007.

"All in all, it's not a good enough track record to merit an early extension, and the market for Moore's services doesn't justify it either. Early extensions for GMs reduce ownership's flexibility and can lock them into a GM they don't want, as with the Mets' 2008 extension for Omar Minaya, who still has a year left on his deal." - Keith Law
Some teams like being stuck in mediocrity.

This reminds me of the time Swift (I think it was Swift) said we'd miss Mike Jacobs.

Ouch. Poor fucking KC fans, how far this franchise has fallen (and will continue to fall for at least the next 6-7 years).
