The Astros made a pair of hires Monday to complete Bo Porter's coaching staff.
The more prominent name is former MLB All-Star pitcher Dennis Martinez, who was hired as the Astros' bullpen coach. Martinez, a four-time All-Star, spent the last six seasons coaching in the St. Louis Cardinals' organization.
“Dennis has an impressive track record as a Major League pitcher and now has six years of coaching experience under his belt,” Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said. “He has a unique ability to inspire pitchers and give them the confidence they need to succeed at the highest level.”
Meanwhile, former MLB first baseman Eduardo Perez was named Astros bench coach. Perez had been the Florida Marlins' hitting coach since June 2011 and also has experience coaching in the Cleveland Indians organization.
“Eduardo has a deep knowledge of the game which stems from his childhood growing up around the game, his days as a college player, a minor league player, a Major League player for over a decade, as a broadcaster and as a coach at the big league level," Luhnow added.
With the addition of Martinez and Perez, Porter's staff is now complete. Doug Brocail is the pitching coach. Dave Clark and Dave Trembley will coach first and third base, respectively. And John Mallee will be the hitting coach.
“With the addition of Eduardo and Dennis, we have assembled a group of teachers and coaches that will give our players the best chance to contribute to their maximum potential,” Porter said.
