            This is pure gold:

Chris Volstad has been seeing a sports psychologist to help him from pressing while he's on the mound.
Volstad's father, Ken Volstad, told the Palm Beach Post that the 25-year-old right-hander has been pressing for a long time due to a lack of confidence and that the issue wasn't really dealt with during his time with the Marlins. "A new Chris Volstad will emerge from here on in," said Volstad's father. "He’s a different person mentally. It’s not going to be an event. It’s a process." Volstad is 0-7 with a 7.94 ERA in nine starts at the major league level this season and is currently pitching with Triple-A Iowa.
            Mibs, there is hope!

His father's earnestness kind of makes me sad.

                        Word

Blue Jays signed DH Edwin Encarnacion to a three-year, $27 million contract extension.
The deal also carries a $10 million club option for 2016. Encarnacion has posted a stellar .295/.382/.565 batting line, 23 home runs and 58 doubles through 356 plate appearances this season while playing primarily at DH and first base. The 29-year-old might be producing at a level that's unsustainable in relation to his career norms, but he should remain plenty valuable for Toronto over the course of the new contract.

1B/DH who spent 8 years being an average-ish bat probably isn't worth $27 million for a good three months.

I've seen it argued that Toronto maybe believes they have some unique ability to ring out the best of guys like Encarnacion and Bautista, which still would not justify the contract, because what they should be doing (if, again, you grant the premise that they have this ability as an organization) is to cultivate the talent cheaply and then cycle through them as they make money, ala the A's and closers during the 2000's.

Absurd is probably a strong word.

I am just against paying a player for his best three months.

I am also not a fan of the contract Jeremy Lin is about to get, for consistency's sake.

I understand the motivation behind signing them by the teams. I just don't think they are good value.
