Cuban baseball star Yoenis Cespedes arrived at Miami International Airport on Tuesday afternoon with a smile and the knowledge that he is on the cusp of being a major-leaguer. Whether his future keeps him in Miami is unknown, but he likes the prospect of possibly playing in front of a large Cuban crowd.
“It is too early to speak about that, but there is no doubt that I would like to play in front of so many Cubans in Miami,” Cespedes said. “Here, I would get [the Cubans’] support, and that genuine support is very important. But there are things that are out of my control and are best kept with my attorneys.
“I am very happy to be in this country, and I will not deny that I would like to play for the Marlins.”
On Wednesday, the Marlins will meet with Cespedes at the team’s new ballpark in hopes of wooing the 26-year-old. Team president David Samson recently expressed the club’s interest in aggressively pursuing Cespedes, who is likely to command a contract worth between $30 and $50 million. Other clubs interested in Cespedes are the Orioles, Tigers, Indians, Cubs and White Sox.

"We want him, but we don't need him," Samson said. "The difference is this: When you want a player, you aggressively go out and try to sign him. When you need him, that's when negotiations get very one-sided."
Cespedes, a 26-year-old outfielder, is tied with Fernando Despaigne for the Cuban League's home run record with 32.
"There's no question we're aggressive in evaluating this player," Samson said. "We think he's a great player and he'll be a great player. And we're prepared to do something spectacular in my opinion. But it may not match what he thinks is spectacular. And it may not match what other teams are prepared to do."

"Our offseason is not dependent on signing Cespedes at all," Samson said. "This is an interesting player, but it's like negotiating with a June draft pick. He's just a little older, has got a little more experience and is closer to the big leagues."
