Except I never said it was a baseball "ONLY" move. I said to believe that the Marlins are interested in Cespedes for the same reasons they were interested in Pujols is silly.

I'll give them enough credit to believe that they didn't think Pujols would be worth $25 million per year for 10 years from a baseball value standpoint. They'd be really stupid to base that contract on his value on the field.

If they were looking to add any .900-.950 OPS bat, they'd have turned their attention to Fielder after missing on Pujols. The fact that they were this close to landing Pujols and aren't even a little bit interested in Fielder shows pretty clearly that it's not solely a baseball decision.

Adding a third latin superstar really seems like a priority for this organization. Not sure how anyone can see it differently.
Again, never said it was "solely" a baseball decision. You guys are misinterpreting what I meant a little bit.

I'm saying that comparing Cespedes and even Fielder to Pujols is pretty off because neither of them can alter a lineup like Pujols. The reason why the Marlins aren't seriously going after Fielder is because Boras is asking for a ridiculous contract for him that he doesn't deserve.

I'm pretty sure the Marlins saw "top five hitter of all-time" when they were looking at Pujols, even if he happens to be Dominican. I'm also pretty sure that Fielder is nowhere close to that category.

    • I think you're being naive if you think "Biggest Latino Superstar in Baseball" didn't matter.

And, once again, show me where I said that it "didn't matter?"

My whole point is that saying our interest in an unproven talent like Cespedes is the same as our interest was in a Hall-of-Famer in Pujols is silly. That is all. Never did I say that our interest in Pujols was SOLELY because he's a great baseball player.

        • The gap between Pujols the player and fielder the player isn't that great right now. If they wanted to add another star player, they would have gone after Fielder after missing on Pujols.

They want to add another star Latin player. Yes, I think that was the primary reason they went after Pujols and not Fielder. They can't market Fielder the same way. It's the reason they want Cespedes; they hope he's the next marketable Latin superstar. I don't get whats so hard about that.

When I said "it comes from a different pot," it's because they didn't view Pujols and don't view Cespedes as Baseball-only expenditures.

          • We should get a poll going of people who prefer Cespedes vs. Fielder.

            • There should be an option for C - none of the above. I'd choose that one.

These are not comparable A and B things.

That's what I was trying to say before; Fielder's clearly going to get superstar money so it's not comparable.

                  • this whole thing about samson saying they had alot of intrest when samson is not that kind of person and now im hearing cubs are the fav. to get him makes it seems like theres a plan in place to mis lead other teams and get fielder.

Didn't the Cubs publicly state that they weren't going after Fielder?

                        • I see no way the Cubs enter into any risky or major contracts. They have a really nice opportunity to clean house with Garza, Dempster, Byrd, Marmol, and eventually eating Soriano's K at the deadline (if not earlier), i.e. all guys who won't be around when they are good again. They aren't going to devote money to anything until next year once they see how all their "projects" with Wood, Stewart, Volstad, Samardzija, LaHair, etc, and what their premo guys like Rizzo do.

                          • thats what cespedes said that the cubs were the most intrested team. maybe its all a plot by samson and company to sneak in and get fielder. just guessing here

                              • Cespedes: Cubs Are Leading Suitors
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 17 at 9:20pm CST]
Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes says the Cubs are his most serious suitor, according to Dionisio Soldevila of the Associated Press (link via DiarioLibre.com). The free agent outfielder isn’t yet a free agent, but he’s playing Winter Ball in the Dominican Republic and MLB teams continue eyeing him."Of all the teams who have come, the Chicago Cubs have been most interested in me," Cespedes said
Last week Cespedes said the six teams with "more interest" in signing him were the Marlins, Cubs, White Sox, Orioles, Tigers and Indians. The Yankees, Phillies, Blue Jays and Rangers also have some interest in Cespedes, but the Nationals aren’t involved. Marlins president David Samsonrecentlyacknowledgedthat his team intends to make an aggressive run at Cespedes, who is represented by Adam Katz of Wasserman Media Group.
