The Baltimore Orioles have traded right-handed pitcher Jeremy Guthrie to the Colorado Rockies for right-handed pitchers Jason Hammel and Matt Lindstrom. The Orioles also designated lefty Clay Rapada for assignment to make room for the pair.

The trade was finalized early Monday morning. Lindstorm registered a cool 3.00 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 54 innings last season for Colorado and will presumably grab a setup role in Baltimore behind closer Jim Johnson. The 31-year-old is owed $3.6 million this year and carries a $4 million club option for 2013.

Orioles designated LHP Clay Rapada for assignment.
Rapada got the boot on Monday morning to clear a roster spot for new right-handed reliever Matt Lindstrom. The lefty had a 6.06 ERA in 32 appearances last season.

Yeah, this trade is a head scratcher. The money is pretty much a wash (Guthrie agreed to an $8.2 million deal with the Rockies and Hammel and Lindstrom make a combined $8.5 million) and the Rockies spent all offseason pretty much trading away their entire team to get younger.

I have no idea what the Rockies are trying to do this offseason. All of their moves have sucked. At least they added a 50-year old pitcher for shits and giggles.
