LOS ANGELES -- Former New York Yankees pitcher Hideki Irabu has been found dead at a home in a wealthy Los Angeles suburb of an apparent suicide.
Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Mike Arriaga says the 42-yeara-old Irabu was found dead at 4:25 p.m. PT Wednesday at a home in Rancho Palos Verdes.
Arriaga says it was an apparent suicide but other details haven't been released.
Irabu has had a couple of run-ins with the law in the past three years. He was arrested for DWI in California and for assaulting a bartender in Japan.
Irabu played three seasons with the Yankees, two with the Montreal Expos and ended his major league career with the Texas Rangers in 2002. He finished with a 34-35 record with a 5.15 ERA.
Irabu arrived in New York with much fanfare. After his Japanese rights were purchased by the San Diego Padres in 1997, Irabu refused to sign with them.
The Yankees eventually traded for Irabu and gave him a four-year, $12.8 million contract. He went 29-20 with a 4.80 ERA and picked up two World Series rings. However, he only pitched in one postseason game.
