Yankees Owner, George Steinbrenner, Dies at Age 80 of Heart Attack
Rush Limbaugh's touching tribute to deceased Yankees owner George Steinbrenner: "That cracker made a lot of African-American millionaires!" Sure: Don Mattingly, Joe Torre, Andy Pettitte, Roger Clemens...Come on, fat boy. At least be human. Remember Donovan McNabb?
Steinbrenner's biggest contribution to the organization was opening his wallet wide. He spared literally nothing in attempting to acquire the pieces to build a winner, each year. It allowed them to have the kind of success that they've enjoyed since the early 90's. His willingness to spend money was easily my least favorite thing about him, but in terms of attempting to build a successful team, it was an admirable quality worthy of recognition. If I were a Yankee I would proudly wear a Steinbrenner buttpatch.
His biggest contribution was instilling accountability and removing the complacency that developed under CBS' corporate ownership. It's over-used now but he made the Yankees a brand, not just a team, and he's the first owner you can say that about.
