So here's my question.

Let's say this play unfolds exactly the same, but the runner gets down the line 1/10 of a second faster and beats the throw, but the ump does what everyone says he should have and called him out no matter what.

Is anyone outraged?

Isn't that call just as blown?

I'm not defending Joyce, he made a shit call. I'm just not sure I want to buy this "you have to call it out in that situation no matter what" argument i've seen a lot of people making.

No one is outraged. The situation matters. There is something called the benefit of the doubt. Don't Marlins fans look admiringly at footage from that 1997 NLCS game where Livan had the world's largest strike zone?

Simply put, no. If it's a bang bang play with 2 outs in the 9th and the ump calls him out (using the discretion that the job allows him), no.

I smile sheepishly at it, but I admit that it was a poorly umpired game.

I dunno. I understand the outrage, sure, but I kind of want my umpires to get it right even if it's not an outcome I prefer.

Admittedly, I was incensed immediately after the play. Completely.

"Tradition" is the last refuge in any discussion. What's so important about a fat guy behind home plate that everyone thinks is blind/idiotic?

Whole "tradition" thing reminds me of the whole thing with people defending matadors.

Fucking stupid. Who cares if it USED to be done? You know what makes humans awesome? EVOLUTION. PROGRESSION. Why are people so hung up on staying static rather than progression to something better?

Yea. I just don't understand why people would prefer human beings prone to error to make calls if technology can do so more accurately and equally fast. Balls and strikes would be one aspect of baseball that I think should be entirely delegated to a machine that is programmed to reflect the strike zone in the rule book.

In other sports, I can imagine things like the 3 second rule in basketball being determined by technology. Put chips in the sneakers of the players and use sensors or something to count it. You'll never get an overlooked violation and it allows the refs to focus on more important parts of the game. Same thing with out of bounds / in bounds for football games. Those things can be instantaneous. You can have a distinct sound go off if a violation occurs and players know to keep playing until they hear something.
