  • Best Teams of the Decade

According to Hot Stove on MLBN:

I'll be the first to say that 2001 Mariners team needs to be higher. I'd take Garcia (136+), Sele (116+), Moyer (121+) over '08 Phillies' Hamels (142+), Moyers (118+) and Myers (96+)/Blanton (104+) in any play-off series.

Not winning the WS hurts them (and that's why they are top 5 in the decade and not ever ), but that team was sooooooo good (+90 in RD over the next closest ).
    --------------------
BTW, the 2001 Athletics had a RD of +239 ().

Not so much because there is unbalanced scheduling and two leagues. I wish I could.

Steroids considerations aside, I think that the two teams people will look back on 20 years from now and be treated with the reverence reserved for the Mantle Yankee teams will be the '09 Yankees and '07 Red Sox.

To me, the '09 Yankees are the best team of the decade in terms of talent on the team and what they ended up doing (and relatively easily) but their place in history, unfortunately, rests with what the '10 and '11 Yankees do; that kind of team just won't get its due unless it plays in 2 of the next 3 World Series, and that's just not right.

You have to think, though, that the 2004 Red Sox will be remembered for all time in baseball lore simply because of what they do

Yeah, but there's a difference between being a beloved Cinderella and being a true world beater.

The '04 team is the team that likely lives on 50 or 100 years from now, but in terms of eye-popping 1950's Yankee "wow, they were all on that team" it's the '07 Sox and '09 Yanks.
