  • Buster Olney Calls Nick Johnson "base Clogger"; NJ to sign with Yanks?

The Yankees are talking with Nick Johnson about the DH role, writes George King. Johnson would be a really tough No. 2 hitter in the middle of that lineup (albeit a base-clogger).

    sigh indeed.

If he called him a "DL clogger" I might tend to agree with him, though.

Looks like he's going to be a Yankee:

6:13pm: The deal is now near completion, says Davidoff. Pending a physical, Johnson will agree to a one-year deal with the Yankees worth about $5.5MM.
      A terrific pick-up, indeed.

He'll never be able to score from first on those ARod homeruns

he'll be batting 9th before we know it

Very smart signing. You DH him, so you minimize his fragility playing the field. Pretty good upgrade over Godzilla. Any time you can add a guy with a .400 OBP in a lineup like that, it's a go. Now even the guys with money are making smart signings.

I am sad to hear this. Fragile yet such a weapon.

            We hardly knew ya Nick

If you think he clogs the bases, you should see him at the buffet.

$5.5 is what it took? Either his heart is really still in NY or the suitors never showed up. You're telling me the Mets and Red Sox wouldn't have been willing to give him 2 years when they have much more pressing needs for a NJ type of player than the Yankees? Absurdly good signing.

That's a bargain. Why are the Yankees being so damned smart with signings now? This concerns me.

I agree, good deal for the Yanks. He is also a great safety blanket if Tex has to sit out a few games
