  • Guess this means lots of Herrera in center. I would try Ramirez there personally. Glad Dean is back though.

Awfully optimistic pencilling in VVM, Devers and a guy that's not even in our organization yet into the 2021 Lineup.

Yea I don't know about that, but I think this can cost $80 million in 2021:

        C - Alfaro, ____
        1B - _____, Dean
        2B - Diaz
        SS - Didi, _____
        3B - Rendon
        LF - _____
        CF - Monte, Sierra/Brinson/Miller
        RF - Anderson

        SP - Caleb, Pablo, Sixto, Gallen/Neidert/Whoever, ______
RP - Guzman, Alcantara, E. Cabrera, Holloway, and Anderson/Richards/Yamamoto/Whoever
        LP - ______, _____, Garcia/Quijada/Lee/Mills/Whoever

Top upper levels of farm for maybe midseason impact - VVM, Garret, Rogers, Devers, Stewart
Top mid-lower levels of farm that could be traded to supplant above - Scott, Osiris, Banfield, 2019 and 2020 picks

Considering they can likely fill a few of those spots with trade acquisitions from Castro/Walker/Urena/Steck/Conley/Rojas, normal roster churning on opportunistic trades/signings (Bour, C. Ross, Uggla, etc.), god-willingly trading some excess back end SP (Hernandez, Yamamoto, Richards, Neidert, etc.), and cheap Neil Walker/Sergio Romo signings, this could be a really solid depth chart if the pitching is what we hope, with money to spend.

You gotta fill in the holes with Pitching depth, but you gotta do it in smart way. Urena has to land us a promising AA or AAA hitting prospect at the deadline. 2020 you will have, Smith, Lopez, Richards, Alcantara, Gallen, Elieser and Niedert w/ Sixto not far off. So 2 of those guys in 2020 need to be dealt for more upper level hitting prospects to get to 2021. It's possible, but considering the holes we're going to have you gotta hit on all 3 of those trades, so we have a decent lineup even if we somehow get Free Agents like Rendon and Didi. Castro/Walker/Steck/Conley trades I can't see getting us more than low-level lottery ticket-type prospects.

For sure. I mean, a lot is going to happen with how successful guys are. If Castro/Walker/Steck/Conley turns into 1 longterm bullpen lefty, I'm honestly fine with that and everyone else should be too. If Urena turns into the next Rojas/Dietrich/Bour/Cody, that's great. It starts filling out the team based on that hypothetical depth chart above big time if those guys are league minimum salary.

This is my issue with trading pitching depth, and why I keep disagreeing with fish 16 that it's preordained: Smith, Lopez, Richards, Alcantara, Gallen, Elieser and Niedert w/ Sixto not far off. Are there more than 4 quality SP there (and hell, throw in Yamamoto and Dugger too)? I'm not sure. Are Guzman, Holloway, and E. Cabrera relievers or starters? Are any of Stewart, Garrett, and Rogers mid-season adds in 2021? I don't see the depth to trade - yet. It may be there, but they shouldn't be trading pitching until they have enough of it and they are nowhere near that for me. All of these guys should stay absent a total opportunistic trade until the 2020 deadline when we have more information and have a better idea of the 2021 innings situation. Hell, maybe they realize they should operate like Tampa and everyone turns into 2-3 IP pitchers. They kind of have the personal for this conversion if you think about it. Sandy is MUCH better 1st time through the order than second. He is a perfect guy to have an opener, and then to give the next 9-12 batters too (i.e., top/heart of the order only once), maximum effort, and do it every 4 days for around 100-120 IP per year. My gut here, is at least, Guzman, E. Cabrera, and Holloway are going to fall into same concept of performance. A lot is going to change here, and they may have just enough pitching end of the day. I hope they can trade from this too, but I'm THRILLED if they have just enough to field a fun and exciting staff.

In all scenarios, they gotta spend. They aren't turning into a contender anytime soon if they don't devote $50+ million to 3+ major starting player free agents. And as mentioned above, 2020 makes more sense as they lose less valuable draft picks. The other scenario is just waiting on the 18-20 draft picks to turn into stars, as I think we all agree that probably isn't happening with Anderson, Alfaro, Brinson, Monte, Diaz, and VVM, even if they get some solid regulars out of that.

I agree with this, which is why I think you can only deal Urena this year. By trade deadline 2020, Smith, Lopez, Richards, Alcantara, Gallen and Elieser should all have over 100 innings in the big leagues barring injury. You should have a better idea of what you have at that point. Chances are Sixto is up by then too, Yamamoto and Neidert should be ready too. In a perfect world you should feel good that you have more than 5 major league caliber starters and that's when you start dealing from strength. Again, a lot of things need to go perfectly with these guys, though. Trying to find a sliver of hope here.

This is the right move. Have to see what you have in him. I'd prefer Dean to also be playing tonight too, but they have Granderson in LF. Oh well...1 for 2 isn't bad I guess...

                    • Why did we pull Caleb at 89 pitches in an AL ballpark?

looking forward to the pen blowing it

                      • Why would it be so hard to convince Rendon to come here next year?

Is it because of all of the playoff success the Nationals have?
