Volquez stinks. That contract was terrible. Another example of why not developing players/trading prospects for mediocre players is such a bad philosophy. Makes us overpay for veteran free agents when we could easily develop our own players to at the very least match his production.

As far as length obviously it is not bad, but paying 11 million a year for a replacement level pitcher that was only necessary because of their own mismanagement and lack of investment into player development/scouting is terrible.

Look at the market for pitchers. Contracts are going up. You either need to draft well and get a Jameson Taillon kind of guy under contract for over half a decade or you spend 10 million+ a year for a pitcher. Just gotta find new ways to game the system now that just about every front office has caught on to the youth movement the past few years.

thats what im saying. it is a horribly inefficient use of money. Especially for a guy who really has been an average pitcher throughout his career.

I would invest in the draft, international free agency, and player development so i dont have to go out and sign replacement level players for significant amounts of money.

If 2 years, $22 million for a league average pitcher is a significant amount of money, this franchise should be considered for contraction.
