          I don't know if you have the Marlins feed but what Minervini said is basically why that rule is there. If Ichiro had gone back halfway to 1st, he couldn't have just darted across the field and ignored 2nd base since he had touched it already.

            i don't question the logic. i just want to see how the rule is written.

            i think someone could make an argument that if the ball isn't caught, he touches the base, and stays within the basepaths (which he has if he's only one step back toward first), then he hasn't actually made a legitimate attempt to go back to the previous base

              Yeah this was my thought. Before this I would've thought that if he had stayed in the baseline, he'd only have to touch the base once.

                      I'm not sure if this is the exact rule (I don't recall them mentioning a specific one on the telecast), but it seemed to be the one that applied most from what I saw:



                      7.10(b) mentions when advancing or retreating to a base.
