Jarrod Saltalamacchia has a .780 career OPS vs. RHP and a .599 OPS vs. LHP

It is super not hard to make him a useful player. He just faced a LHP in a high-leverage situation. That is terrible usage.

22% of his plate appearances last season came against LHP. That's actually slightly higher than the team's overall rate. He faced *more* LHP than you would expect.

And, of course, because you can't risk the backup catcher getting hurt, they'll never use Mathis as a late-inning defensive replacement (he appeared in just 12 games as a sub last year) or pinch-hit for Salty vs. a LHP.

So, Mathis provides really good defense three times every two weeks, and having him on the roster means you can't put Saltalamacchia into a position to succeed.

Part of the reason why he gets criticized is also because he's not good. It's not just his hitting; his defense is terrible too.

Also, 2013 is beginning to look like an outlier for him. If you look at the rest of his career (excluding '13 when he had a .372 .BABIP), he's just really not good at all.

basically, he is being used as something he is not, and then gets criticized for not being the thing he is not. smart organizations put players in the best position to succeed, regardless of their merits in a vacuum.

Even if you think Saltalamacchia is bad, you can't argue they have put him in a position to succeed.

If this is the reasoning for not pinch-hitting for Salty there, well for one it's retarded, but 2 if you're that afraid of that unlikely scenario, carry 3 catchers, hell the third catcher will still probably get as many ABs as fucking Don Kelly's going to get.
