A guy who can give you a .750 OPS consistently with positional versatility is not a guy you throw away for no reason because you're out of it. Same thing with cooper. Why trade him instead of just stashing him for next year? Teams often over think things and think that not being in the race means you deal every non star you have, but this team is going to try to compete next year, and Cooper is a quality hitter.
I saw lou the other day say "you can find DH/1b types every year in free agency" and while he's absolutely right in the abstract, has this front office given the fan base any kind of reassurance that they will pick the right guy? How many guys like that have come here and shit the bed? I imagine its a lot more likely they manage to find the next Michael morse before they find the next garrett cooper.
