I'm pretty sure on Opening Night I acknowledged that his velocity was slightly down, which is what the numbers showed. It was down even more slightly during this start.

What I said after his first start was that these types of fluctuations are perfectly normal, and within his expected range for a given start, as he had starts with this sort of velocity last year. I still do not think there is enough of a reason to be concerned yet, because again, fluctuations like this are mostly random and to be expected at various points in the season.

I would like to see a much larger sample size than this before I get concerned.

So let's assume, this is the new JJ velocity-wise. He's going to have a tough time fouling anyone with a so-so fastball, a greatly reduced slider, ok curve and not much else.

If this IS the new JJ, score one for Beinberg. Score one for the peeps who become queasy at long term deals to pitchers.

Still early though. Maybe his injury didn't allow him to get ready for the season like he would in years past? Wouldn't surprise me if he took a handful of starts to get himself into form ala Javy.

Yeah, I'd like to hear more about what his offseason consisted of. His ST regime might have been modified as well. This could just be a case of not getting enough work in, as is the case with LoMo and Stanton. Too bad our beatwriters don't give a shit.
