There are growing indications that Barry Bonds will accept an offer to become a hitting coach for the Miami Marlins.
According to USA Today, Bonds has tentatively agreed to a deal with the Marlins that would have him working alongside hitting coach Frank Menechino.
The Marlins have refused comment on the possible hiring of the controversial slugger, the majors’ all-time home run leader. But sources told USA Today that “barring a last-minute change of heart, Bonds plans on accepting [the job].”
Bonds has never had a full-time coaching position at the big-league level, though he served as a special hitting instructor for the San Francisco Giants two years ago.
In addition to Bonds, the Marlins also plan on hiring Juan Nieves as pitching coach for new manager Don Mattingly. Nieves was pitching coach for the Boston Red Sox from 2013-15.
