  • Marlins Trade Trevor Williams to Pittsburgh

For all the Trevor Williams haters he has been dealt to Pittsburgh.

For who? Some 20 yr old who had trouble in the GCL and in 2014 had 24K in 65 innings pitched(Nope not a typo)

Some mention tho that it may have been compensation for signing Jim Benedict tho. Solid SP prospect who throws strikes for VP of Pitcher Development and some guy. Only the Marlins

Benedict changed his delivery last season and they had him pitch out of the bullpen as he figured it out. Why his walk rate skyrocketed. He struck out 14 in 21.1ip in the GCL. 7 of those were in 2.2ip in his final outing of the season. Benedict is high on him, worked with him all year.

Throws 91 with a hard sink to his fastball, good change, and a curve. Has really good command. He pitched to contact because that's what he was taught to do by DSL coaching staff. They were working on his approach and mechanics last season.

And even if it was indirect compensation, I would trade one of our 45 #4 SP prospects for Benedict anyway. He'll have more value here than Williams ever would have.

O i agree, but seems like they don't even try to lower a price.U dont think if we said NO how about a lesser prospect that Pitt is gonna tell him he can't leave? Like the Cubs or LAD trades this year,u see what teams were trading and what we got. Haren/Latos were nothing special but u are telling me that if we didnt ask for a better prospect they would have said NO? The feeling around the league is our FO(whoever is in charge) takes what they are offered

On the surface, the move seems curious given the Marlins’ lack of arms closer to the majors, but the timing of the hiring by Miami of Pirates pitching coordinator Jim Benedict and his input certainly can’t be ignored.
See the input thing is my theory, not the compensation. I think Benedict wanted this kid and they got him.

You figure our rotation is going to have Jose, Koehler, and at least 1 FA.

We have Conley, Cosart, Flores, Nicolino, Urena, Pineyro as back of the rotation candidates. With all of them except Pineyro more highly regarded than Williams. And that's not even factoring in Alvarez (cause how can you at this point).

Williams is a 45 grade SP who is highly ranked in our system because our system is garbage.

That's not to say that this looks like a good trade on the surface, it definitely does look weird. But the outside circumstances (either compensation or inside information from Benedict) make it kinda hard to really judge. It's interesting.

More on Benedict, who is probably the best move this organization has made in years:

Benedict’s role expands with the Marlins. Benedict said he was not involved with the amateur draft evaluation of Cole and Jameson Taillon with the Pirates. He will be involved with draft the Marlins. He will still be involved with rehabbing pitcher, but he will play a greater role in evaluations of potential acquisitions, it seems.

“I will be involved in all things pitching at the major league level: the draft, rehab, (player) acquisition,” Benedict said via a text message.

I was complaining about this trade, but if it was some kind of indirect compensation for a competent talent evaluator then that's fine. On pure face value the trade didn't make sense to me.

Yep trade was comp for hiring 2 Pirates FO guys. The Pirates complained about it and to shut them up we then dealt Williams.

That's a bad way to put it. They didn't "complain" they were gonna block Benedict from coming. Which is their right.

As I said before good to get a decent talent evaluator for once. Unfortunately we have a incredibly thin farm system as it is and can't really afford to lose a prospect, even if it is a Williams type. He offered some potential as a starter down the line (more likely a solid reliever). With a good season he had a chance at seeing major league time and could've been used as bait at the trade deadline. Sucks to get no real players in return.

But as HUGG said, we have a ton of backend starter options already. Don' expect Williams to suddenly have a resurgent season and make us look like chumps, so Conley/Pineyro/Urena/Nicolino/Flores/etc... should be good enough. One of those guys should prove themselves good enough at the majors.
